Keith 25
Hi all, right have owned my RR P38 Diesel for 20 years, problem! when I press the brake pedal I get what feels like an ABS judder for a second or two but once I depress the pedal further it returns to normal. In addition to the initial judder ABS,TC and handbrake warning lights come on but then go off when the pedal is pressed further. The brakes are firm and work well, any ideas. elbekko
Do you also get the solenoid clicking noise like when the ABS/TC comes on? If not, I'd say brake disks.
Keith 25
thanks for the reply, not sure about the clicking noise will check, the discs have been on for 6 years but have only done limited millage as it was off the road for a few years they arent worn could they still cause this problem. Keith 25
Just had a chat with an ex RR mechanic friend who works abroad, I had a rear drivers side break line rupture 6 months ago, I had to crimp off the pipe to get some breaking back to get me to the garage. When I crimped the line I got the initial judder, the break line was replaced but still came back with the initial judder, is it possible there is still air in the system? Shall I do a pressure bleed? M friend said this could be the problem ??
Keith 25
PS the ABS sensor seems to be fine on that wheel and have checked cleaned ect the others.
Bowie69
Yes to a bleed -it is almost free, and air won't help anything.

Escape
Make sure you follow the correct procedure to bleed the system. The P38 braking system differs from most in that the rear brakes are only supplied via the powered circuit. You need to have the ignition on so the hydraulic pump can run and provide fluid under pressure to the rear calipers. When you take the wheels off for bleeding, also check the bearings and make sure the sliding pins are all moving freely.
landroversforever
You say it was sat for a while.... are the brake disc surfaces ok? Not on a P38 but I've had a bit of a judder/pulsing until the discs cleaned themselves up.
Northwards
When I got my P38 it had been quite little used. I would get an intermittent judder. To start with this was about 50mph, but would occasionally come on at anything above 30. By chance one day I parked the car up and walked around the front. A small gust of wind brought a lot of heat to me, and I realised the driver’s side wheel area was really hot. What was happening was that caliper was sticking on quite a lot. When I took them off the pads were almost literally ‘toast’. just something to consider or rule out?
Keith 25
Thanks to everyone, have checked the discs and pads all seem ok, on the bleed my friend has a pit so hoping to access the wheel bleed nipples with him pumping the pedal. I have a video to help and it does instruct to turn the ignition on to activate the ABS pump. hoping to have a go at this on Friday will let you know the result👍

And the sliding pins on floating calipers (like the P38).
Keith 25
Right, have bled the brakes and the initial judder has been 95% eliminated Paul who I helped has said we need to power bleed!! to finally resolve the problem. In addition we replaced the slave cylinder, so all much better. Also checked bearings and discs all seemed good. Thanks to all for help as its a 27 year old P38 am sure I will be back on this forum soon😠
Escape
Good progress! The bleed procedure on the P38 is a bit different to most cars, because of the hydraulic booster. Best to follow the manual. 😉
