ltwt1981
Anyone help, my starter is a bit slow. Does any other motor fit a 2.25 petrol 3 bearing series 3. What about 2.5 petrol 90 or similar, and is it better/faster or more torque.
tiagoc
i remember reading (here or on another forum? hmmm... ) that the starter from a 200tdi is a direct swap edit: only after i hit "submit", i read "petrol"... sorry for my previous useless info
bill van snorkle
I think the old inertia starter motor on 2 1/4 engines was the most reliable product that Lucas ever produced. Just fit the same again, but first check that you have a good earth from the battery to the engine and or from the starter motor bottom bolt to the chassis. Also check that the lead from the solenoid or push button on early models to the terminal post on the starter motor is tight and secure. There were a number of 1950's British cars, trucks and tractors (Austins, Morrises, Vanguards , grey Fergussons) etc that used the same starter , but you are probably not likely to find any of those in breakers yards in the UK anymore. Jon White
Nige, You can fit the 2.5 petrol one but you need to swp the flywheel also as the ring gear is different. However they're no more reliable than the series ones, as at least there is no throw out on the solenoid of a series one. Jon
ltwt1981
Many thanks, I think I have a spare in the garage somewhere which I'll find and renovate on the bench I think. Just wondered if any of the later geared types would fit that was all.
s3landy
Check out www.wiseowlparts.com and look at their rocky mountain starter.I have one and they are great. Mike
Phil Hancock
Rocky Mountain starter is for diesel i think you will find. 2.5 petrol starter wont fit in this case as the flywheel wont swap, he has a 3 bearing engine not a 5 bearing. I,ve never seen a 2.5 petrol over here. Are the ring gears not removable like the 2 1/4's? Bill.
Jon White
Bill, Yes they are removeable, but its alot less hassle just to swap the flywheel over! I've no idea if the ring gears are interchangeable or not - never tried! Swapping the flywheel is a nuts and bolts job. Jon
steve_a
We used a 2.25 diesel starter with a 2.5 diesel if that is any help Nigel? As it happens I am about to remove a 200tdi starter (which is the same as the 2.5 one) so if you wanted to look at one I could possibly help. s3landy
I can't comment if the Rocky Moutain starter will fit a diesel but it does fit a 2.25 petrol. Mike
