landybear
Guys, Am not new to the auction scene, well cars anyway but no one really seems to talk much about Brightwells auction. I see its advertised in LRO so might take a trip up their for a look. I believe you have to register for £500 bucks deposit and if you dont buy you get it back. How does this work if i take my father in law with me, does he pay to, and why do you have to pay a deposit?? Anyway, i have looked at a fair few Defenders over the last year or so but cant justify paying silly money. What do you reckon to buying at auction?? I know their are no test drives which is a pain but anything else?? Many thanks
FridgeFreezer
With most auctions I've ever seen/been to there seems to be the 1% of stock that's a genuine bargain and 99% tat, and a lot of it can be difficult to tell apart unless you really really know your stuff. Car auctions can be a place where lazy dealers offload perfectly good Px's for very cheap just to shift them, or it can be where dodgy dealers offload smart looking lemons to unsuspecting punters looking for a bargain. The lack of any sort of test-drive or decent inspection chances really makes it a minefield. My uncle was a trader for a number of years (and a mechanic for even longer, and a professional repairer & sprayer) and even he is very wary of auctions, there are far less risky ways to find a good car these days. Steve Hiatt
A good number of independent dealers source their stock from there, and a good number of main dealers dump their 'not for shiny showroom' stock there. I would hesitate to buy a late RR from there but think you can tell enough about a Defender without driving it but rolling underneth, to make it worthwhile. western
These 2 links may help, I've been with a mate before with possible purchase of 110CSW & SW vehicles, but didn't see any he wanted, good place for a day out to get the feel of the place though & usually loads of vehicles to dribble over, I believe Brightwells have a very god reputation too. Orgasmic Farmer
Defender always make big money there. I went with a mate recently and bought him a tidy Disco. L plate with 90K miles for 1100£ - Ex police training vehicle!! I was worried sick it would be a dog but was really a good buy. 6 months on and it is still fine. It was white whcih is a hard colour to shift for dealers and I am guessing a large number of things they have in are of that order high miles, bad colour, low spec etc. Remember the used car market is supersaturated so anything not up to spec can be hard to shift and just takes up capital and space for a dealer. Brightwells are a very professional concern in any case, just take your own sarnies as the food is expensive! I actually walked down the line of cars waiting to come into the ring when the one we were interested in was shortly due and had a chat with the bloke driving it. He said it felt fine and I could hear it running before it came into the ring.

Top90
Most important thing is decide a price and stick to it. (I'm sure you know this) I got a 90 there a few years back, and the owner was trying to bid the price up.

You can get good buys, but fantastic ones don't exist in my opinion as there are plenty of dealers who sell defenders on for sensible money. I've had better buys on ebay..... at least you can test drive them first. (there are lots of dodgy ones there too!) If you don't bid they will refund the £500 when you hand back your bidder details/number. So it's a free day out.
Tractorboy16
hi, we went for a day when we were that way, friends live there. He has brought the past 3 4x4 from there at good prices, all isuzu's so swears by it, but if you look at the land rovers there arn't many bargins to have, when we were there they all made top end money and i used to get the catologue for about a year with all the sale prices in as well once the auction had commensed and the prices were all in the top end of the price bracked. I personally wouldn't buy a landy from there. However, is definatly well worth a visit for the day, some nice vehicles!!!! James
