TD5 Squeal

Hi,

My 2004 (53) TD5 Disco has recently developed a squeal when accelerating. It seems to co-incide with the turbo boost starting around 2000 revs and increses and decreases in pitch the same as the turbo whistle.

I spoke to a turbo specialist before Christmas who suggested that I check for end float on the turbine shaft. I did this and indeed found a little end float so I have put a new turbo on at great expense, but the squeal remains.

I have checked the vacuum pipes off the intercooler feed, turbo and air intake pipe from the filter box for splits and all seems ok.

The car has done 91k now and was chipped around 10k ago along with an upgraded intercooler. She still pulls like a train even though she squeals like mad.

Has anyone got any ideas what it could be?

Someone in a previous thread mentions exhaust manifold gasket, is this a posibility here?

Manifold gasket is a possibility but I have seen a couple which I think were caused by a loose baffle in one of the silencers, didn't do any harm just annoying! Also check the intercooler itself - may be a hole in the cooler though if it is a new one I guess that is fairly unlikely.

Thanks for the reply.. I have just listened to it again and it is definately coming from within the engine bay around the turbo side somewhere.

I think I read somewhere that the Vacuum pump is built into the altenator on these. Is this true? if so then I suppose that it could be that! just expensive all this trial and error stuff :(

Check the wastegate actuator arm is OK i.e. it is attached. I recall seeing one a couple of years ago which made a horrible squeal and it was eventually discovered that the wastegate arm had popped off the turbo, it is hard to see due to being in under the heatshield so wasn't noticed at first. I doubt it is this as you say you have changed the turbo, but worth checking anyway.

Check also to see if any of the rubber intake hoses have delaminated inside - you will need to take them all off - you are looking to see whether the inner lining has come away and is either blocking or just vibrating in the airflow. Normally means a power loss, but not always.

Due to the way it is associated with turbo boost I would say it is in the turbo or the intake system somewhere, not other ancilliaries. Have you checked the air filter to make sure that is fitted properly and not blocked? Is the lid clipped on the air filter box properly? (seen that too)

The 'warped manifold' comment from PaulW has triggered a memory, in that I'm pretty sure I've read about cracking TD5 manifolds before, and something about removing (grinding out) some webs to inhibit this. There might be a Tech Bulletin about it.

My source might have been the Blackbox Solutions Forum, which is only open to users, so as an alternative it might be worth speaking to the guy at www.td5alive.com although I haven't found a reference on his site.

Purely out of curiosity, it will be interesting to know who supplied your intercooler and fuelling modifications.

Thanks for your response to this. The Intercooler and fuelling mods were carried out by Alisport in Gloucester. Top job and makes an incredible difference when towing.

Sounds like it may have caused the problem though!!

just to throw a spanner in the works.

my 200tdi still does it. now i havent had chance to change the manifold gasket yet cos its gonna be hell removing everything to get at it, but i will no doubt find the time to do it anyway

but does it only do it on accel or on overrun too? mine has started to do it on overrun as well, which points to lack of lubrication somewhere in an axle or swivel housings or worn ring and pinion, so im gonna have to lube up and see if that makes any difference too

Best thing with TD5 manifolds is to drill the holes out from 8mm to 9 or 10mm - this allows it to move a bit. Broken studs are common and a bit of a menace to get out - often the only way is to weld a nut onto what is left and turn it out. Often the head threads need to be helicoiled. Get the manifold skimmed, remove the webs and (if you can afford it) get the thing ceramic coated inside and out. That last cuts the heat down and helps a lot.

If you compare the TD5 manifold to the 300Tdi manifold you can see the design flaws straight away:

Tdi - 3 piece manifold with no one piece with more than 3 x 10mm studs

TD5 - one piece manifold with 10 x 8mm studs

The squeal starts around 2000 revs whether I am driving along or sat reving it on the driveway ( no load). Once the revs drop below 2000 the squeal stops and sometimes I can accellerate through it on the road and it dissapears around 3k.

I do about 60 miles a day so get used to it now! but it seems less prominant when I am in 5th gear for some reason, or crusing on the motorway.

I hope to check the pipes haven't delaminated at the weekend and may even tackle the manifold gasket if that does not prove successful.

The vaccuum pipes all go back to a small unit mounted on the block. Does anyone know if this could be the source of the problem?

SUCCESS!!!! (I Hope!)

I have finally had it confirmed that it is the exhaust manifold warping that has caused the squealing problem as you guys suggested.. After going around the houses again I was finally put in touch with BG Landrovers who are based near Monmouth. Paul at BG says that this is so common (on standard vehicles not just chipped ones) that he keeps a stock of re-surfaced manifolds. Cost to exchange the manifold, fit the new one replacing any studs that may have gone will be under £300 inc VAT and courtesy car!

He also says that as the new manifold is "pre stressed" it is extremely unlikely that it will go again.

Next thing is to sell the old turbo that didn't really need replacing and try and get some money back!

There is some truth in this theory, but I would still drill out the holes a bit to avoid future stress. We have had skimmed manifolds blow gaskets again.

Hello again,

Finally had the exhaust manifold replaced by BG landrovers last week, It has indeed cured the squeal which is fantastic, very helpful people and completed the job when promised. Unfortunately the damage to the studs and head was worse than hoped and they had to replace 3 studs with inserts, one of which had to be 10mm. To get to one of the studs the Air-con system had to be discharged and then re-charged afterwards. The car was dropped off at 8.30 and I finally left their premesis at 6.00pm. The total bill was just under £500 inc VAT which was more than I had hoped. But at least it is sorted.

Just to put the boot in I had the disco MOT'd today which failed on a leaking Power Steering box and the Emissions!!!

Changed the steering box without too many dramas (£125.00 +VAT from M&M).

Emissions could be an issue, and once again point towards the fact that it has been chipped. Taking it back to Alisport next week to get them to check the settings and hopefully get the reading down a bit. The maximum level is 3.001/m and we were getting readings from 3.47 to 3.75 1/m

More money!
