FridgeFreezer
Someone's dumped this in my back garden: Because it apparently needs some welding on the back end, however I'm not 100% sure this would be an MOT fail? (This is the left rear body mount, which is OK, it's just the floor crossmember that's crusty on the end)
SteveRK
I found a web site recently that contained the MOT guidlines for examiners but i cant find it! Bugger as it deals specifically with cars that have seperate body and chassis like the Rangie. It was quite clear that the body mount points are an integral part of the vehicle structure and therefore corrsion within 30cm of said points would fail. That said mine passed with a rotten rear crossmember so it comes down to the examiner
Highway_Star
What he ^^ said. Technically it's a fail. Mine passed for 3 years with a cross member worse than that, before I finally got round to replacing it.

sheltie50
Hi, You need to a bit carefull here as the rear of your r/r might be a little soft, I have seen the goalposts moving on very bad examples, replacement is not such a bad job if you can weld and will be a cure for many years. SteveRK
Thanks Paintman - Saved it this time - very handy info' for disputing with the examiner with - can wave it in his face!!
Highway_Star
That's not a rusty rear body cross member, THIS is a rusty rear body cross member! Was so bad that once I got it out, finger pressure was enough to distort it
SteveRK
Thats nothing I wish my rear crossmember was in one piece!
sheltie50
I replaced mine last year as most of it had been lost on the road but had to jack the rear back into position, dont leave it to long.
Highway_Star
Steve, that's only the middle bit, the rest (from the body mounts outwards) crumbled onto the floor! Two stern kicks and that section was a pile of flakes.

geoffbeaumont
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo! It was only supposed to be a small repair So what have you volunteered for, Fridge?
FridgeFreezer
I was asked if I could have a look at welding the rear body mount, which is at least relatively easy to get to. Turns out to be the body x-member dunnit? and from the link above it looks like doing it properly involves taking the back of the truck apart When are you bringing the spanners round then, Bill? Bill Shurvinton
I'll look in the diary and see what I can get a pass out for. You should have said you could get the welding rig to me

geoffbeaumont
Ah the joy of daughters. I hope one of them wants to learn to weld oneday:) Funnily enough I bought a welder last summer intending to learn, but I picked it up the same day I delivered the Range Rover to Zuz and Jez, and have been lacking anything to attack since then. Seems like I'd have had something to attack if I'd sold the Discovery instead!
