pugwash
Is there any reason why an exhaust can't exit under the middle of a vehicle? does it have to exit to free air for any reason? Are there any legalilities to be aware of when routing exhausts pipes and exits?
Night Train
Looking at lorry exhausts they seem to exit underneath the load area or the off side or, in the case of tankers, at the front. I guess it probably needs to not allow fumes into the driver/passenger area or be at face level to pedestrians.
sgnas
The last two 7.5tonners (horseboxes) we've had exit under the middle. On a passenger vehicle it could be different to stop fumes in the cabin!
bishbosh
Yep, it must not terminate under the passenger compartment - I think it is an MOT requirement.
Les Henson
Bish is right - it must be in line with or slightly proud of the vehicle so that exhaust fumes can't enter the driver/passenger compartment. You can have the exit anywhere you like as long as it follows those rules. Les.

Dunno what they say about lifting tailgates. Ron

honitonhobbit
My 100" exits before the rear X member but points downwards and was SVA'd like that. Both Auverland A£'s and G Wagens have exhausts that exit before the start of the rear wheel arch
Guest mortus
is there a hight limit? i heard that you cant have a side exit above a certain hight as it will blow fumes into lower cars open windows?
bishbosh
The point is that all these exhausts exit. They don't stop under the floor so when you are stuck i traffic the exhaust gasses are trapped under the vehicle and may find their way into the passenger compartment.
