EBC Discs and pads.

I am interested in replacing the standard solid discs on the disco with the EBC rotors & pads.

Are they worth the effort? I'm undecided about having solid or vented. I suppose I'd have to change the calipers as well if I opted for the vented ones?

Has anyone fitted them and thought the difference in braking was worth the expense?

If I opt for the vented ones....will the vented discs and wider calipers fit the WOLF rims okay?

Thx.

Can't help with the Wolf rims bit, but I havent heard or read a bad report on the EBC kit or the similar Powerstop kit, so all positive.

Not sure u want to go to the vent option, may be if u do a lot of heavy towing in the mountains.

I never suffer with with brake fade, but then I don't tow.

The wolf rims fit fine over the standard 110 and 130 ventilated disks and their calipers. Many people here fit ventilated disks and calipers to their Discos and 90s. There seems to be more of a demand for second hand unventilated calipers so often the breakers will swop the calipers free of charge.

not a direct answer but...

I've got a Disco td5, I fitted about a month ago a set of EBC brakes

- front: vented slotted/drilled rotors with yellow pads

- rear: slotted/drilled rotors with green 6000 pads

it takes about 500miles before the brakes start to be really efficient.

I'd say that the 1st braking in the morning is a bit sluggish, but after a mile or 2 they DO bite...

It's almost if you can feel something "solid" under your foot... you have to make sure you don't go too much or the ABS light becomes to act like a christmas tree...

I tuned my td5 so I wanted extra safety, so it was worth the money... now it's like putting a decent standard tyre or a performance one... one will be better but do you need it...

however I don't think I would go back to std brakes now..

Hello,

I fitted EBC drilled and slotted discs with green stuff pads to the front of my 300 tdi. I cannot fault the discs, they are of good quality and are wearing well.

The pads were a different story. Although they braked well, they rattled in the calipers when not braking. I eventually changed to genuine parts pads which have a rubber backing, NOT present on the green stuff pads.

Perhaps that is why they feel so different?

Anyway I will not touch green stuff pads again.

Chris.

Depends on how much you use your brakes as EBC Green need to be keep heated. I have drilled slotted front brake disc which work well and have tried EBC Green pads but found scary moments coming of motorways and when you first use them. Gone back to Mintex brake pads on the rear as pad wore out at about 10000 miles and found them more reliable and will be changing the front to.

Hmmm, alot of mixed comments here, and I'm going to add to them.

My vehicle is a D2 TD5, I recently replaced the disks and pads with an EBC set up - The disks in my opinion are brilliant, they are vented and dimpled and grooved (not cross drilled) which have a similar effect to fully drilled disks only they are stronger and not prone to cracking between the holes, for a LR these are more than you will ever need, even fully loaded. They are of a superior metal quality to the cheaper disks and are even balanced (Not that you'd notice this) plus, they're made over here in the UK.

I can tell you that no mud/crud builds up in the dimples or grooves as is generally perceived to be the problem with fully drilled disks, I have had these covered in all sorts of mud/muddy water and they cleaned up quickly and didn't lose any braking effeciency, obviously, gunk gets into the vented part of the disk, but this will happen to any OE vented disk. My OE disks quickly got scratched when I went playing in the mud but the EBC's are still good, maybe I'm lucky

As for the pads, well, I'm not intirely sure about them, will only be able to tell once I've eliminated all other potential problems i.e. caliper rebuild, SS brake lines.

The reason I say this is because I too have experienced the break fade mentioned in some of the posts ( very randomly) but as I said above, need to check some things out first before I slate the pads. If you are going to go for them, go for the green stuff, all the other colours are for track/fast road cars and require alot of warming up/beating to get them to work properly, I don't know, maybe you drive your LR like a racer

I don't know why someones pads on here came without the rubber backing but mine had them and they don't squeal, a good clean and a bit of copper slip here and there when fitting and it's fine. Also, these pads drastically reduce break dust, and it's a pleasure washing the wheels.

If you compare the cost of EBC and a good quality set up there really is'nt that much difference, also, if your'e going the whole hog you may as well change your brake lines for some SS ones, these alone will give you better feel and performance.

Sorry for the ramble, BTW , I know buggerall about whether these will fit on wolff wheels or if you can change your disks for vented without changing the calipers

Thanks for some informative posts chaps.

I ordered the EBC non-vented discs in the end...along with the stainless brake lines.

Pads.

I spoke to a number of people on the subject...and even the supplier of the EBC discs in the UK didn't rate their pads much. he reccomended Lockhead instead. (there's honestly for you!)

My local Rover workshop has tried everything over the years...he reckons the Lockhead squeak like a pig. His prefferred choice of pad has been Ferrodo.

Thats not to say that the Ferrodo will give the best performance when used with the EBC discs though. They can't be any worse than the Land Rover pads that only seem to last 6-8000km before they need replacing. I've noticed the LR pads also tend to rattle in the caliper more than others.

Best part of all this.......I got free freight on the discs from UK to Dubai! The supplier is attending one of the exhibitions in Dubai at the end of the month and he offered to put my discs into his crate free of charge. They also added my new

X-Eng Disc brake to the box as well.

That has saved me a fortune!

Thanks Britpart!

my LR pads do 10,000 miles and thats with alot of towing.
