Freelander out of fuel

Recommended Posts

:(

Being completely thick I trusted the Freelanders fuel guage when it said it wasn't empty and it ran out of fuel a mile from the garage, luckilly all down hill. having bunged £20 worth of fuel in it won't start. Turned over for ages and no luck...

Its a 2001 1.8.

Are there any grown ups in the house who can help?

Will :(

I would have thought a 1.8 should self bleed as IIRC it has a pump in the tank. Can you hear the pump running when you switch the ignition on? Should probably come on for a few seconds and then shut off so you may need to listen while somebody else switches it on.

Not sure I haven't had a chance to get back to it with a helping hand and some tools. Thought it would be wise to get some answers on here before I started undoing stuff ;)

I thought maybe it was an airlock or carp in the filter. I am hoping undoing the fuel cap will sort it but somehow I doubt it ;)

Cheers

does the engine have a (what looks like a tyre inflation valve) on the end of the fuel rail?

If so, turn the ignition on, wait 5-10 seconds and turn it off, and repeat couple times

then press the centre of the valve in with a screwdriver (not your finger end)

repeat until fuel comes out under pressure

the worst bit was i had a 10lt can in the back

did put it in, but not till given up on all other things it could be <_<

....it may not have run out, it may be the fuel pump has packed up ...not unheard of with diesel freebies. Is the filter under the bonnet or in front of the o/s rear wheel under a plastic cover? If you can hear the pump run with the cap off it should make an even whirring sound ....if it sounds a bit like an old SU pump off a Series 1 it's probably gone phut.

HTH

Cheers

Yep its working fine again, took the fuel cap off as someone recommended and it fired first time and is running just perfect again, used another tank and a half of fuel since then so it was just a minor airlock by the look of it. Phew.

I must say I am enjoying Freelander ownership, didn't think I would but its quite a lot of fun :)

  • 12 years later...

We just ran out of fuel in our Freelander and it wouldn't start.  Tried the trick of  taking the fuel cap off and the car started second try.  However,  you need to take care taking the key out of the fuel cap as you can only extract it if it is in the locked position and it only locks when inserted in the car.  You have to push the central insert in to make the cap think it is in the car and while trying to get the key out of the fuel cap, the thing fell apart. After starting the car and making sure it would restart,  we reassembled it (you can only do it with the key inserted) but it jammed in position when i tried to lock it onto the fuel tank and couldn't withdraw the key.  After carefully fiddling with it (I was worried it would come apart again and some part would fall into the fuel tank) I managed to get it out but again the whole thing came apart. It took a couple of goes to reassemble and make sure it was working properly and this time when we tried to insert and lock it into position it worked fine.

Summery- taking the fuel cap off works to clear the air lock but be very careful when removing the key from the fuel cap!
