what gear/ transfer box do I have?

I am confused as to what gearbox

I have,some say LT77 some say LT77S others say R380, I am totally confused can someone kindly help me.

Defender 90 200 Tdi 1991 hard top, as far as I can see everything is original.

Also can someone say what transfer box I might have.

if reverse is top left then its an LT77 - which is what your truck would of had originally

it would also of had an LT230 with 1.4 gear ratio assuming is was always a Tdi

When they started making Tdis in 1991 they changed to LT77S and started using the 'Defender' name. There is not much to choose between an older LT77 and an LT77S. From 1995 when the 300Tdi came out they used R380 which continued through Td5 until they started putting the Ford engine and 6 speed gearbox in.

All factory built 200Tdi Defenders have the LT77S mainbox & the LT230 transfer box 1.410:1 [high range] low range is common across the LR Defender range of vehicles.

AFAIK the LT77S had better (!) syncros on 1st and 2nd to remove the crunch on the 1-2 change. Except that it didn't. So maybe the S stands for Sod all difference.

ther will be a label on your transferbox stating the ratio,you might have to clean the box to find it! if the box is in good nick the 77s is a better box than the original 77.
