CJRH
I’ve got the 200tdi engine, LT77 gearbox and LT230 transfer box lined up in the chassis. What brackets have people used for the gearbox? Pictures would be a great help as well. Chris
Phil Hancock
IIRC the chassis side rails are normally drilled and fitted with crush tubes to then use the standard mountings from a disco/rr.
FridgeFreezer
Use RR ones, the Disco style (central rubber mount on the x-member) loses clearance and the rubber costs piles of cash for some reason.
CJRH
Cheers for the reply’s, I've got hold of classic range rover ones that bolt through the chassis rails, it’s the brackets that go onto the transfer box one side and the gearbox the other side that I'm not sure about. I have got a set off I think range rover, the offside bracket is a flat square plate, bolt hole in each corner and a central hole for the rubber, the nearside one is a lot bigger and harder to describe! I tried to offer them up this evening but I can't see how they are going to work. Cheers Chris
Les Henson
Defender ones - TD90 - both the same on the case- Les.
CJRH
Thanks for that Les, will they work with the range rover classic brackets that bolt to the chassis rails? Chris I'll take some photo's tomorrow of what I have got hold of.
Les Henson
I don't know, but if the rubber has a single threaded shaft, then it's likely. Better if someone replies that knows for sure. Les.

FridgeFreezer
This may help - stock RR mounts on a Series chassis, the gbox x-member was ditched shortly after for a RR one. Results in minimal underhang:
Jon White
I used defemder ones and drilled and tubed the chassis rails. I used standard series engine mounts which bolted straight up to the 200tdi. Jon
Les Henson
Fridge - you say you removed the series g'box x-member and replaced it with a RR one. Why was that, did the series item foul the gearbox? Les.

Why was that, did the series item foul the gearbox? I can't remember if it fouled anything, but the mounts on it weren't needed and the RR one bolts on. DaveSIIA
The photo by FridgeFreezer shows the crossmember under the flywheel housing has been removed (I'd imagine to clear the front prop.). The way that the Series gearbox crossmember attaches to the chassis does little to enhance the stuctural strength of that area. The more beefy RRC/Defender gearbox crossmember would help put some strength back while maintaining clearance for the front prop, potentially avoiding exhaust routing issues and being easily removed for gearbox/clutch repairs. FridgeFreezer
What he said Putting the RR x-member in the standard RR place with RR trans mounts meant everything (props, exhaust) lined up as standard, saves a lot of faffing about. CJRH
Ok, the engine is using the series engine mounts and series diesel rubbers. Pictures below show engine mounts, how the engine and gearbox currently sit in the chassis, I'm having trouble squaring it up at the moment, and the gearbox mounts that I have got hold of. New front cross member
Jon White
I chopped the series gearbox crossmember out aswell. I bolted the gearbox mounts to the box, and used a trolley jack to raise the rear end until the rear propshaft flange was vertical, and marked the holes for the mounts on the chassis rails, removed the box again and drilled and welded in tubes. IIRC I had to chop the bottom off of one of the mounts and re-drill the lowest holes further up as it hang below the chassis rail on my 88". james.lw
my light weight now nearly on the road i put the 200 disco mounts with the engine and for the gearbox i make 2 brakets and with 200 disco mounts it doesn't make vibrations and it comes a little bit higher than series or 90 mounts james see my thread with some pics http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=13899&st=
CJRH
John, the gearbox cross member, not wanting to sound stupid, but just to confirm, that’s the one that the original series gearbox bolted to?! Did you replace it with a bolt in gearbox cross member, if so is there a measurement of where the bolt in cross member should go? Thanks, Chris
Jon White
Yes the one the series gearbox is bolted to. I just chopped it out and got rid of it as the LT230 mounts bolt direct tot he chassis rails. Jon
CJRH
Some more help required! The 1st photo is a spirit level on top of the engine, the 2nd photo is on the chassis showing that the engine is parallel to the chassis. I have attached the nearside gearbox mount but as you can see it is sitting below the chassis, so, have I put the engine mounts on correctly? Is the engine sitting too low? Or, is it simply that the gearbox mount that I have got hold of is the wrong type? Chris
DaveSIIA
I think you need the mount in photo 12 of your 11:27AM post.
CJRH
Hi, unfortunately that is the mount I have used..... Chris
Jon White
As mentioned earlier - you need defender mounts, but you will have to modify the NS one. Jon
CJRH
Thanks Jon, I'm off to the wanted section now! Chris
Jon White
Be aware you need ones from a 4cylinder, as ones from a V8 with an LT85 gearbox are different! I discovered this to my cost! Jon
