110 Station Wagon Insurance

Hi, first time using this forum, I have had a 110 for years but have just put deposit with a chap for a 1989 Station Wagon 110Defender. (which was what I always really wanted) It has 12 seats, the V5 (perhaps luckily) is blank where the seating is concerned. Since making deposit I have come across some discussion hinting at a problem in insuring due to high no of seats. It is registered as a disabled passenger vehicle. Am I going to run into trouble insuring ? i passed driving test way back in 1978 so think no problem with the no of passengers I can carry but wonder if insurance companies could get sticky with insuring these multi seated vehicles. I dont want to remove the seats really. If I dont respond dont be offended, just yet getting head round posting etc !

you shouldn't have any problem with insuring it as a 12 seater, if you do removed the some seats, I'd suggest the front centre & fitting a cubby box in it's place & the rear side facing bench seats, which will drop it to a 5 seater with lots of boot space to play with.

my 110 was a 12 seater & I didn't have any problem insuring it, depending on your location [if rural area] try the NFU that's who I've been with for the last 13 years.

it'll only be classed as a minibus if it's used for public service hire & reward wotk, not if insured as a private vehicle, mine was originally insured with the AA & after the first year I changed to NFU who have been brilliant.

if you decide to use the NFU don't do it on line find your local area agent via here input your town or postcode on the right of page to find your local agents office.

i want to use nfu, but theyve "been busy and would ring me back in 10 mins" on 5 separate occasions, and when i did get through the guy i spoke to was a fool AND they would only insure me commercially because of my profession, even though i made it clear i had access to another vehicle for work!

that aside ive heard they are good.

also be careful and check the paper work-my boss bought a VW transporter with 11 seats and when the paper work came through the cheeky bloke had insured it as a pick up WITH ELEVEN SEATS-that would be an interesting ride!

but alot of places dont like it-he spent several days trawlling and ringing round

things have moved on then, as when I first went to NFU in 1994 they had no problem with it being a 12 seater & insured as a private vehicle with no minibus use.

I suggest you check with your local agent or regional office,instead of just doing it online.

I have one of those rare things. A STATION WAGON. Not a County. Mine is insured through the Edenbridge office. Now it's insured as a five seater...Mainly so my youngest daughter can drive it.....

I have also found that different offices have different ideas. The local office to me wouldn't even talk to me about a Land Rover.

Sureterm would not cover my 110 2.5 n a d as a 12 seater, could only get it done with seats removed down to 5 including the driver. They were the only taker, I am 46 have no points or accidents or have been ever refused insurance. And also a permanent other vehicle a Disco 1 with full NCD on it.

I had a harp on about this topic a while ago as in NI where I live we find getting insurance quotes a nightmare if you drive somthing that is looked upon as different (not really sure were that notion comes from though). I had mentioned if it was like that for everyone we should do something. But what I hear you say, as I have. I am open to suggestons.

I went through this exact same problem back in March when I bought my 5 seater (but being retro fitted to 11) Station Wagon.

I tried every single Land Rover insurance 'specialist' in two well known Magazines and every single one of them were fine until I mentioned it had 11 seats. At that point they said they wouldn't insure me. And this is including Adrian Flux.

The reason they gave was the cost of up to 11 personal injury claims in the event of an accident. Nothing to do with Public use or minibus or anything like that. Just the cost involved if up to 11 people were hurt.

Whether this is true or not I don't know as I don't rate insurance companies highly when it comes to being honest.

In the end, and on the advice of Western and others, I went with a local branch of NFU Mutual (don't go online, go to your local Mutual office).

They not only knew what a One Ten was, but why it might now have a retro fitted 200 Tdi, rock sliders and a winch. They also cover you for off road as long as it is not competion.

Mine was also registered as disabled Road Tax and I had to have it changed back to normal PLG by sending off a few forms to my nearest DVLA office. Only took a few days.
