V8 questions

Hi, I've just got myself a v8 after previously owning several diesels

firstly, where abouts is the engine number? Ive heard its near the dipstick but i've been out and couldnt see anything. does anyone have a picture showing it?

I appear to have and oil leak coming from there the oil filter housing assembly bolts on. It doesnt look like there is a gaskget between it, should there be?

SU carbs. It has a pair of these fitted. Should there be a pipe connecting them both? there are a couple of attachments with nothing on them which could take a hose?

And if you can poke your finger in the flap with your head under the back end there's something wrong with you

Engine number should be behind the dip stick on the top face of the block.

The block may have been machined in which case the number will be swarf.

Thats an early V8 with those SU carbs mit float chambers on the front

Engine number for this block will prob not be as above mentioned,

but will be stamped on the very back part of the engine where it joins the bellhousing

on the top slighly offset towards the passenger and will also have the compression too

could be a 9.35:1 or even a early 10.5 :1 if your lucky

Well i've just had another look and it has a purposeful looking flat bit on the back by the flywheel, slightly to the passenger side and guess what? theres no number

If it is on the side of the block near the dipstick (not me ) would it be above or below the spark plugs. wait thats a stupid question. It would be below the plugs as they are on the head. its very tight in the SII engine bay so cant really see anything.

I'm not sure if they are the original carbs as it came with another manifold in the back with a weber carb on it??

Hi,

The rocker covers suggest an early engine but that does not really mean anything as they could have changed.

When my LR had an early P5 engine the easiest way to tell was that as it was a 10.5:1 CR engine it pinked really easily on hills or when going up hill.

Welcome to proper LR driving

When it runs properly it will have more smiles per mile than anything you've driven.

From 86ish the alternator migrated to the other side also the water pump is from an earlier V8 but it looks like an early 3.5 that has had some mods to make it perform better. What is that thing with the red stringy bits coming out.. just asking...

You refering to the dizzy or to the boy racer chav filters!

So we're thinking its a pretty early engine, possible HC. Is there a way of seeing whether its a high compression engine or not without the engine no. ... which i cannot see on it anywhere?

I do know that the carbs need balancing and the mixture sorting out as it doesnt like full throttle. My mate has a balancer so he's going to put me straight on these things as im used to oil burners.

the car also came with a remote oil filter and mogul cooler attached, but not plumbed in. With the part that goes where the existing filter assembly goes, should there be some sort of gasket?

The two pipes coming off the carbs are for crankcase breathers and should be blanked off or you will get a weak mixture, probably why it wont rev. You could link them together with a bit of pipe before you set the carbs up.

ah ok, so blank them off, link them together or even put the crankcase breathers back on

I would certainly suggest sorting out the engine breathers to make sure that a) the engine can 'breathe' or you will get oil leaks from pressure build up and B) resurrect a breather system to prevent condensation build up.

If it was me I would look into reverting back to a standard air filter system - You dont need induction noise with a V8

Yeah the induction noise does sound a bit unneccasary.

I do you mean sorting out the enigne breathers? how should i go about doing it?

also but may be wrong the tube that goes to the air filter on the right doesnt look too healthy could poss be another problem for full throtal

That engine looks like my RR 1973 8.25:1CR engine. Valve covers, ignition leads the same color(hopefully they have been swapped sometime...), distributor, alternator (Lucas 18ACR?). The cap on the valvecover seems to be from a later engine though. The earlier was grey in color i think. Also no bracket/mounting plate for power assisted steering pump that became standard around 1974 on RR. Use a small mirror to look around the engine for the engine number.
