Steve Warman
Hi, I'm looking to get a diesel 110 to replace my petrol 90 and one has come up that seems alright. The question i have is that it has a TD engine and not my preferred option of a tdi. Are the TD engines ok or do they have any major known problems that would need to be checked for? Thanks Steve
Aragorn
They actually have a bit of a bad reputation. Often cracking pistons, burning a lot of oil, and making very little power. If its in good condition, the addition of an intercooler to get the combustion temps down might help the longevity a little, but if i was buying one, i'd be also budgeting for swapping a TDi engine into it. Steve Warman
Cheers Aragorn, seems like a non starter then.

Don't write it off as a duffer! Hopefully most of them have had the bugs ironed out of them by now. As long as you look after it, you should get enough use out of it whilst you save up/consider your options. They aren't quick, but then again where can you go quickly nowadays! Regular oil changes, & TLC I'd consider it, especially if the rest of the vehicle is in good condition.
Steve Warman
I've just read a bit mroe detail and it's been fitted with an iveco td engine and not a LR one so not sure now
Aragorn
i'd always bear in mind that the engine can be changed pretty easily. If the rest of the truck is solid and the price is good, then it follows that even if the engine were to turn out to be a squib, you can always replace it. ThreePointFive
The Iveco engines were discussed here very recently: http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=42215 Doesn't sound all that bad to me. Why you'd want a Defender without a V8 is beyond me though.
western
Iveco 2.5TD in a 110 is a good unit, they used to be a retro-fit engine for 90/110 before LR did their own kit with the 200Tdi.

Thanks Steve My 2,5 TD has gone 385.000 km so far and is working fine. I'm planning a little celebration when it reaches 400.000 km ;-)
