How bad is my turbo - 300TDi ?

Recommended Posts

Chaps,

I noticed a turbo whine a couple of weeks ago and a slight power loss and have now found this:

The engine has done about 95k. I don't know how the damage has been caused, as I have never run it with the air filter off. I did not notice anything fall out when I took the inlet hose off, but the whine seems to have stopped (longer run needed).

My questions for those of you who have seen a lot more turbo's than me are:

Should I replace the turbo immediately, without running the engine again or can I soldier on for a few weeks (motorway/road, occasional lane) ?

Any recommendations for a good turbo exchange deal ?

All help received with the usual gratitude

Regards

Richard

Is there any sideways movement on the shaft, like this: -

If not, I would say you could live with it for now.

It clearly looks like somethings been though there that doesn't belong, however, the damage is already done and provided it's not out of balance I can't see its going to get any worse.

mine went like that after sucking some muddy water through the air intake - the silt went through the turbo and polished the fins off it.

it's still like it two years on, and running ok though blowing more black smoke. My boost guage still shows it reaches 0.8 bar though.

Thanks very much to all. I expect the original offending part that did the damage is somewhere in the intercooler too. A replacement turbo seems definitely required. I will have to stop spending money on unnecessary things like double glazing, nappies and Dulux emulsion

Every cloud... Maybe an excuse to get a VNT, though you may need more nappies if you do.
