VGT on a 200TDI Defender

Recommended Posts

Enzorovers rebuild was a 200TDI with VNT he may help

Thanks for that. So in summary, he got a turbo from Allards that he had to modify a lot to get to fit!!! Not much point going to Allards unless it is a proper bolt in kit. That is kind of depressing really as I "assumed" that they would supply proper ready to use kits. At least that is what it says on their site. Maybe things have progressed since enzorover did it.

The point is that 200TDi discos and all 300tdi's use the same (well similar) underslung turbo. The defender 200tdi is a bit of an odd case, and its not surprising that the companies arent making a turbo for it, simply becuase its the rarest model.

You could convert the 200 to the underslung turbo, but that would give you the similar problems you get when trying to fit a disco 200tdi into a defender, or you could go down the route enzo took and modify the turbo to fit the high position.

No, mine is left hand drive, and trust me, there is not enough room to clear the steering.

Ah didnt think of that. Over here many people have fitted the Disco motor into their older defenders, and with a bit of tweaking it all goes, but obviously we dont have the steering gubbins on that side.

I guess if you REALLY wanted to, you could fit a 300tdi gearbox, crossmember and propshafts, which would move the engine forward into the 300tdi position, and presumably give you the space required?

That may well cause other issues though, and its a toss up whether the work to make the turbo fit would be less than the work to move the entire enigne forward...

Some research down the same route bounced the gt2256v as the turbo to use, it seems to be the same one or similar that allards sell as a kit, the quest is finding one which is pressure controlled, most seem to be electronic, especially looking at doner vehicles.

The ideal doner is an iveco van it seems, as it has the 4 bolt pattern at the manifold mount, the exhaust is another story, it will need to be rebuilt to suit.
