greenmonster
Dear Friends: I am new to LR4x4.com and would like some advice ... Own a 1996 Defender 110 (300Tdi/manual/LHD) which I have added an external/internal roll cage to (similar to NAS version) and have modified the dash. It has 5.5x16 (original) steel wheels ... and Old Man Emu heavy-duty suspension (springs, shocks, caster kit, absorber/damper). Currently has BFGoodrich 235/85R16 A/T tires ... As it is somewhat top-heavy as a result of the modifications, thought of putting Rovers North 3 cm spacers and would like to put 235/85R16 BFGoodrich MT tires. Would like some insight from members as to whether using the 5.5 steel wheels will present any problems. Thank you. Greenmonster.
western
235's will fit But might look a bit 'pinched in ' at the tyre/wheel seat, better bet would be to use 6.5 inch wheels or 7.0 inch wheels, 6.5 such as XD/Wolf steels like mine [see photo below] or Discovery 7 inch steel wheels or the 'modular' style steels
Yostumpy
I've got 6.5" 130/1ton rims on mine, but i do like the look of disco steels, in silver, on a white truck, cheep to! BUT in the latestest? LRO comic their 'tyre expert' harry Holton, xplains that you shouldn't use disco alloys, OR STEELS on a 110 as they now rated for the weight!I thought that the steels were rated for this weight. Is he talking out of his bottom! Also wat is the offst like on the disco steels same as 130/wolf or more like std ones but 'further in' reducing lock as they're 7"
mmgemini
If you use 235's on the standard Defender wheel then the tyre wall will run on the road. This in it'self isn't really a problem. It is however when you leave the tar and you's likely to get sidewall punctures. Ask how I know. I use Discovery steel wheels. They are more than rated for a fully laden Defender 110 station wagon. Don't even think about wheel spacers. You will go through wheel bearings like a knife through hot butter.
Retroanaconda
Disco 7x16 Steel wheels on mine: Currently with 245/75/R16 Trac-Edges, but will be 255/85/R16 BFG MTs soon
RustyNissanPrairie
how 'bad' is the offset on disco rims-ie how much does it effect the allready oil tanker like turning circle?
Yostumpy
It does look like they are std wheel 'sticky outness' with the xtra 1 1/2" inwards! where as on my 1 tons there is an xtra 1" in width but it is all 'sticky out!' if you know wat I mean. so they look wider. Diff
From a technical point of view, BF goodrich and every other tyre company I have found details for, say that 6 inch rim is the minimum wheel rim width for 235/85x16 tyres. Therefore you will be hard pushed to justify their fitment if you had a problem with an insurance claim or a brush with the law. See here: http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/specs/all-terrain-t-a-ko/44.html Having said that many people do fit them to the standard 5.5 inch wheels without ill effects. I used them for many years without problem, but then switched the same part worn tyres on to some 7 inch modulars and there was a very noticeable improvement in the cornering and handling. I would not put them on 5.5 inch rims now. Hope this helps, Regards, Diff
mmgemini
My information on Discovery steel wheels is that they're rated at 1340kg which if my maths is correct that means they can cope with a CVW of 5360kg. Well above the GVW of a Defender 110 station wagon.
Lars L
Ralph, I've been thinking about getting me a set of 255/85s, but I don't like my 110 to become overgeared... My new R380 brought the revs down in 5th gear compared to the old LT77 (which it handles just fine uphill), so what would it be like with the higher gearing by the tyres on top of that? How do you find yours with more or less the same setup as mine?
western
Mine drives very well, doesn't seem to run out of pull on long drags & will happily pull 70 in 5th/overdrive in, the 255's will put your speedo virtually spot on correct too. Lars L
Yep, I know that thing about the speedo. I've had Cooper S/T 255/85 in the past, but my old 2,5 n/a engine didn't have enough stamina to turn them properly. I assume that the 200Tdi will.
