v8 advice please

I want to fit a v8 to my 1986 2.5naD 90. I know some will be asking "why?" but it's simple...I just like the sound of 'em. I used to own a 1980 RaRo and wish I had never sold it. My neighbour owns a newer but still classic RaRo and I go green when I hear him reversing up his drive. I've been offered a complete unit with all ancillaries fo £70 from a fellow Landie enthusiast.

My questions are:

Is it worth it? the engine, that is

What changes will need to be made to the transmission and drive train etc etc

What other things will I need to consider?

All advice greatly appreciated

Hello

1. I am horribly biased to V8s !

2. It will gulp fuel

3. V8 and heavy right foot can = breakages

4. Sounds lovely

5. You'll need adaptor plate, mounting mods maybe, and general minor fabrication skills

If you can' t weld or fabricate basic stuff, or have a tame mate who will don't try this route, it is not difficult, but you do need some basic skills.

6. If you are prepapred to spend money there are a load of parts LR based that can be fitted rather than make bits

7. The special bits you take ages to make will be the ones that you break, so try to use std stuff

9. Drive train and gearbox is ok, just be aware of the BHP differnces.

No doubt some oil burner enthusiast will be along shortly to ruin your day :lol:

And I thought I was sad....lol

I can weld basic stuff (have arc and mig) and besides, my old man is a welder/boiler maker by trade so he'll be busy.

Fuel isn't really an issue as it's only my toy and I don't do that many miles in it (or will that change when I hear the exhaust note?) I don't do any serious offroading just greenlanes and kerbs (big kerbs of course!)

Oh yes……….. 8 cylinders of petrolhead porn is much nicer than a 4 pot deep fat fryer. :lol:

If you use an adaptor plate you will need to cut ‘n’ shut the bulkhead as the engine will sit too far back, not leaving enough room for the nearside manifold. A lot of folk do it this way but in my book its not good engineering practise.

A better way is to get a V8 gearbox input shaft and V8 bellhousing, then the engine sits in the correct place and you can use standard V8 coolant hoses etc.

Of the LT77 boxes the LT77S is the strongest and OK behind a V8.

The engine mountings will also need to be moved on the chassis ………… many of the chassis suppliers can provide these for about £16 a pair.

The amount of fuel it uses in insignificant when compared to a Boeing 747 :rolleyes:

I put a 3.5V8 with auto in my NAD 90 and the performance is lacking on motorways, a little hill can take the punch out of it.

SO saying I put RR Transfer box in with the converson. This has now been replaced with 1.44 tranny from early 110, as I ended up putting 35" tyres on..

Sadly I have not been able to test drive it yet, as normally working by myself at weekends after taking wife and kids out (actually quite pleasurable) so 8 hours work takes me 2 weeks in elapsed time, Oh and replacement box seems to dislike being filled with oil (new seals all round) but drips like a goodun.... so will be taking out again to see where the oil is coming from....

If I could do it again, Id get a 4.6 or a 300tdi, one sounds nice, the other doesnt sound too bad ....

I dont do enough miles to warrant an LLP conversion....

hello out there

i also want to fit a v8

i have a 127 with a lt77 box and it did have a 2.5 petrol engine but i have just got a 3.5 efi , gas conversion with an auto box and all electricckty bits

i want to fit the 3.5 to my lt77 box already fitted to landrover

after reading the above posts should i get a conversion ring or can i get a v8 bell housing to fit and will they just bolt together thanks . dirk

You can use a conversion plate, or use a V8 bellhousing and main shaft and rebuild your gearbox with that, or use a V8 LT77 from an RRC (early RRC LT77's are long stick like defenders), or my prefered choice for a manual box in a 130 would be an LT85, these are much stronger than an LT77 if a little more agricultural.
