fatforbes
Had a look at an A reg series today. It's a petrol, chassis is good had new outriggers, alternator,HT leads and front prop and it started straight away with no smoke. Bulkhead and doors have some corrosion but not too bad, front n/s wing is a bit battered and it doesn't have any MOT/tax. It has also has an overdrive (not sure if these are standard). Not sure how much the guy is asking yet so what should I offer for it?? Cheers
Jeff Young
The overdrive (if working well) is worth £300+ on eBay. With no MOT all the rest together probably has a similar value. So at a guess (and I'm no expert here), you'd want to be in the £500 to £1000 range. Jeff.
FridgeFreezer
I wouldn't value the overdrive that highly, I thought they usually hovered around the £150 mark. A ding on the wing is no bother at all, the biggest question is what the condition of the bulkhead & chassis is, if it would pass an MOT or not and if bits are going to fall off. Aside from that, if it starts, runs, drives, and stops then depending how long it's been without an MOT I'd say it's worth a punt for £500, although if it was MOT'd that would probably double. Landy'd Gentry
I would agree with Jeff, The overdrive is worth a few hundred pounds on any of the forums / ebay alone, and the rest of the vehicle is worth anything from £250 to £1000+ depending on what the seller is prepared to accept. A friend of mine just recently bought a Series II 'basket case' for £500. The seller was happy, my friend is happy because for not too much work (a few weekends) he will have a servicable Series II. Like wise, from the photo and your description, you too could have a servicable Series for not too much money. So it reaaly is a case of can you and the seller agree a price you both would be happy at?

He he... you obviously haven't tried to buy one. ( Several have gone over £400 in the last few months.) Jeff.
fatforbes
Just did some research and found that it's on ebay and finished tomorrow(wasn't told this), so it will probably make more than I'm willing to pay, bummer. Seller wasn't there but I think he wanted around £600. here it is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1983-LAND-ROVER-88-4-CYL-BLUE_W0QQitemZ250770466160QQcategoryZ29748QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp5197.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D7086602005820102327#ht_500wt_1156
David Sparkes
The free wheel hubs should be worth a little extra (if they work), although some people have no time for them. The Ivor Williams hardtop is also a desirable extra, worth more that a bit of raggy canvas anyway. I also see OD's going for over £300 IF, IF, they aren't the horrible whining worn out variety!! I notice there's a leaky rear hub to sort out, which might also have affected the brakes. Check the valve in the rear axle breather is free before replacing the hub seal, etc. HTH

Worn ODs increase backlash but have little noise over the standard whine. As for FWH increasing a vehicle's value, I doubt it - they're so cheap to buy new and are so low on the desirability list that I can't imagine them having any positive influence on value. Personally, I'd be made more suspicious of the vehicle by their presence, suspecting wear to the front transmission and the steering swivel pins and bearings, either pre-existing and "fixed" by the FWH or caused by the lack of splash lubrication and wear post installation - I would offer less for the vehicle with them fitted than standard flanges. ludylandy
I also see OD's going for over £300 IF, IF, they aren't the horrible whining worn out variety!! I removed the deafening, whining, worn out overdrive from mine a couple of years ago. Sent it off to a Landy transmission specialist who stripped it and replaced the worn parts for £150 IIRC. It was then listed on ebay as a recon unit with full explanation of works carried out and it sold for a very pleasing £650. Wont help with the initial purchase costs but it's worth bearing in mind as you may be able to recoup some cash later.
David Sparkes
Just to capture the sale, it went for £761.00 after 19 bids.
