need4speed
On stripping my transferbox ive discovered that someone before me has fitted a cross-drilled input gear.. According to ashcrofts some of these can cause a whine if they havent been 'crowned'. Now as the transferbox is an unknown to me, should i risk rebuilding it with the cross-drilled gear or should i get another one from ashcrofts? Has anyone noticed this whine, and if so how bad is it? reb78
I'd rebuild it and see. They're dead easy to change if you decide it's loud. I have an Ashcroft gear and also have a whine - god knows if it's the gear or some other component in the box!!
bishbosh
I would suggest if you haven't heard the whine then you should be OK! What lead you to stripping the box in the first place? Was it a whine or other issues / curiosity ?
tango90
Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by "crowned"
zoltan
http://machinedesign.com/article/crowning-a-cheap-fix-for-gear-noise-and-misalignment-problems-0212 this may be doing it a disservice but you get the idea
JimAttrill
If your transfer box doesn't whine your engine has stopped
