Boris113
Morning all! One of my swivels has started to leak very heavily (despite having one shot instead of EP-90), there is a large ammount of pitting in the ball also. After speaking to a friend that works for LR, I decided that if I'm going to the hassle of removing the swivel, I might as well fit new ones instead of changing the seal. I had a look on the paddocks website and although the axles are on my 90, they came off an S-reg 300tdi disco so does that mean I would need the kit that specifies up to JA032850 or from JA032850? Are the paddocks kits any good? There is a thread about them in the defender section that says they could be a lot worse, and they are about £70 +VAT so not as expensive as I thought. Finally, is it a difficult job to do and are they are special tools I would need? I've got a fair ammount of kit, but no specialist tools for setting the bearing preload etc? Thanks in advance, Harry
SPendrey
It would be FROM JA... given the age of the axles you're fitting to.
Tetsu0san
All you need for setting the preload is a spring balance, nothing more. Make sure you set the preload without the seals in place though. The whole thing is not a hard job, but it takes quite a while and is a really messy job. Les has done a tech guide on this job, very good it is too. I was advised not to get cheap swivels for this job as they will leak very quickly. I would imagine that Paddocks will be sh**part, however I fitted these and it has not leaked (yet). landroversforever
I'd try and get a Bearmach Kit. Its what I used and the quality was great. Bearing preload I do by feel... tighten it up so that the bearings start to bind slightly, and then slacked a tad. Basically tight enough to take any slack when you wobble the wheel. Bowie69
The Paddocks kits contain really crappy bearings, so avoid IMHO. The swivels are OK though, had mine fitted for a couple of years now and no problems at all, and no signs of wear.
DDO173
The hardest part of the whole job is getting the 2 torx screws on the bottom of the housing undone. They hold the bottom swivel pin and damping bar in place and when fitted at the factory (assuming its never been replaced before) locktight/sealing adhessive is used and they are stuck fast! I found the easiest way to get them out was a lot of heat from the hot spanner and usual case is the heads get cheesed off. I bought replacement CSK hex head bolts and put pleanty of sealant/locktite on, IIRC they are M8x40mm...genuine is FTC3455.
Boris113
Thanks everyone , I shall start hunting for a bearmach kit, if not then britpart but with different bearings! Does anyone know where to buy the bearmach kit from? most of my searches come up with britpart... I will have a look for the tech guide by Les also, never had my swivels apart before so not too sure what to do Thankfully I know my little torx screws will come out with too many problems, I had them out at christmas just before I fitted the axles to put new one-shot in...although one of the heads is a tad mangled so will get some new ones also! Thanks, Harry
landroversforever
Best bet is probably to visit your local Land Rover specialist and ask i they stock them/will get them in for you. The Bearmach kit is all quality stuff and has Timken Bearings . If not, ask Bearmach for your local stockist/dealer. Hope this helps Harry! PS: Torx screws? where are they? I guess that mine being an early axle was before Torx was invented
Puffernutter
A few messages back, but the preload is not for the wheel bearing, but for the swivel and is achieved by adding/removing spacers at the top until a predetermined amount of force will smoothly move the swivel from lock to lock. Last time I did it was with the swivel off the car. Cheers Peter
