Stage 1 V8 Swivel on Range rover front axle?

Hi

Is there any one out there that can light up my life with some knowledge,

I like to get permanent 4wd on my series 3.

Many have tryed to fit RRC axle to there series and discoverd that the steering need som extra work.

I read some where on the intrernet that the CV´s on the stage 1 front axle is almost the same as the RRC.

(A total Stage 1 front axle is no option, To hard to get )

So my question is simply. Is it possible to fit parts from Stage 1 axle to a Range rover axle?

exp the crome balls and Swivelhousing etc.

If so, Then it whould be possible to fit RRC disks on the Stage 1 Swivelhous and still use leafs on a RRC axle. Or if not, What is the problem ?

Ok, I could be wrong in some of this so anyone who spots something wrong please correct me!!

In terms of actual axle tube, I believe the RRC item is wider. Apart from that its no different to any other Rover axle, if you ignore the swivels. You'd have to change the diff to a series ratio 4.7:1 anyway, then you'd have to fabricate spring mounts (harder than you may think) and remove mounting points for radius arms etc. So surely it makes more sense to fit the swivels and CV's from a Stage 1 onto a normal Series axle?

That's if you can get a decent set of Stage 1 swivels. They are not that common in your part of the world. There is a reason that people resort to RRC CVs.

If I recall, then the S1V8 axle is closer to the std series axle, than the RRC axle.

Those who have gone the permanent route say the UJs are ok, so long as you have an open centre diff. Its when the centre diff is locked that the UJs become "lumpy".

I have a v8 axle on mine with AEU2322 CVS and 24 23 spline halfshafts. Its nice!

Coiler axle diff is further to one side as well as wider. Different bolt pattern and castor angles.

Just fit a regular axle and it will be fine.

But as Tom says, Is it possible to fit the S1 swivel on the series axle direct? does in bolt on?

I think the CVs are bigger and need bigger housing. Is it possible to fit CVs in Ujs housing?

I know that the swivel to S1 is like the phantom. (every one knows about it but, no one have seen one)

But if I would find a couple, would it realy fit the series axle?

I've been running a standard series axle in permanent 4wd for years. Its fine. Alot of people who've never tried it will try and tell you otherwise, but apart from minor kick back through the steering when at full lock, you'd never know the difference. Stage 1 swivels will not fit a range axle tube without machineing - if the whole axle is too hard to get what makes you think that finding bits will be any easier?

Our good friends modified 88" has 1974 rangy axles, on coils still. As they are 6 evenly spaced bolts between swivel ball and axle tube, I've often wondered about fitting the '74 swivels to my '72 Series 3 axle tube....already leaf sprung, and giving me disc brakes in the process...

LRSeries have '74 swivel balls and housings on the shelf, for sensible money too.

Stage 1 swivel balls differ from other series balls in that the railko bushing and bottom swivel bearing is spaced out further away from centre , presumably to clear the cv joint. The railko pin is slightly shorter and larger diameter. I'm not certain any of that is strictly necessary as a friend of mine managed to fit 110 CVs into normal series 3 swivel balls.You will need either the stage 1 bushed stub axles or RangeRover classic stubs with a custom thicker bush to make up the difference between the series swivel housings and the smaller rangeRover housings.
