Ratty43
Good work on the bulkhead, there's nothing quite as satisfying as bodywork when it comes out well, or as annoying when it doesn't for that matter. Personally I would have bought a new loom, they are not that expensive and if you want it to attract top prices everything needs to be as it should be. discomikey
right, another update, not a lot looks to have gone on, been stripping the old bulkhead and trying to work out what i need and what ive got now ive got an idea though it should speed up a bit. plus im off uni for christmas. the door gaps were a bit wonkey, the bulkhead just needed adjustment as it wasnt quite vertical on the chassis but is now. so here are the old door gaps. (forgot to take pictures of new paralell door gaps) put the wing and slam panel on to determine where clips are going and place the wires where they need to be cos it made me feel like id done more lol looks like i need to learn panelbeating and if like me for some strange reason youve ever wandered what a series would look like as a mini scammell type thing then this might give you an idea. dashboard popped into place for now and does this go here or should i leave it out, as the old bulkhead had a hole and fixing brackets next post will show you what i mean about this. discomikey
... continued. heres the whole i was on about. and should i keep this origional plate, or should i get a new one because its faded, but then it is the origional one. what do you guys think??? and is this (the grey squares in the middle) where i need to put them on the new bulkhead? discomikey
what was left of the old (if you could call it) loom and if youve ever wandered how the hell to get a round heater off a series 2 bulkhead, then theres a hidden grub screw which needs to be undone to allow the motor to slide out the back of the dash. ejparrott
Keep the original plate if its still legible, no need to change it. I don't think there's any particular requirement for where it is located, the SII I'm finishing off has it way over to the passenger side, mine is on the brake servo, and I know one where its on the end of the seatbox. All have passed MoT's like this for years
discomikey
yes, i think i might put it back on the bulkhead cos its got the transfer lever instructions on and the 4wd notice. but i dont know whether to put it in the middle or right next to the transfer lever.
ejparrott
put it next to the transfer lever, makes more sense then
discomikey
nipped to paddocks today and a couple of other places and now reduced my list of things to get down to 6 items, for now. im sure i will find more. ready to fit them all this afternoon
discomikey
more or less finished the wiring now apart from the need of a thicker wire for the alternator and confusion over the plugs. couple of piccys. much neater.
discomikey
had another half day at it now ive got my ramp installed and working. wasnt 100% happy with the P/O,s brake pipe routing, it was fine, and safe but didnt look as nice as it could have done. so i redid them all. ordered some exhaust brackets and limestone paint for the wheels too. only paddocks forgot to send half the brackets, so i cant fit my other, new exhaust. engine is all degreased and rear crank oil seal done so i can refit the flywheel and clutch assy, then put the engine in. then its body panels painted, cappings galved, bulkhead of for paint, engine painted, body panels slowly go on etc. looks like i need to get me a new paint gun as i keep borrowing one and i think its time to invest. ejparrott
Whats with the engine hanging on ratchet straps???
Retroanaconda
Looks like it's sitting on the saw horse to me, steadied by the straps. Like the ramp!
discomikey
yeah its sat on the horse steadied by the strap. i really need to make myself a proper engine stand. although that would kind of be useless in this situation where i need to get at the back of the engine
ejparrott
I bought a MM stand in the end, I figured it'd be cheaper than buying materials and making my own. Like you say though, not easy to wok on the back of the engine.
discomikey
i thought i should make one that also has loader brackets on it though as theres always engines about. and if i take one out to do work on it i can stick it on the loader and move it about out the way. but it would also be freestanding and on castors. anyway, engines in now so just need to sort things out and get it running and driving then i can concerntrate on the bodywork. discomikey
so a quick update. engine in and runs really sweet but needs fettlign with the timing etc. still needs painting but theres some bits need doing first. exhaust mounted i think its time for a new wire brush on the grinder too, its shedding its wires. a good 4-5 mm embedded into my arm. nice bodywork started, the only thing that needs filler so far is the bulkhead as the corners were completely rust free, but dented. Bang On. shows how rippled it was. bodywork almost done, just needs a little more work, bulkhead nearly ready for lifting off and painting. once its painted and i can paint some of the other bits too then it should fly together, but i need some new front wings as i dont really want to put filler in it if i can help it, and my panel beating skills leave much to be desired. ejparrott
Welding gauntlets and face mask whenever using a wire brush in the grinder, safety first, you don't want a wire in the blood, thats very painful and requires hospitalization!
discomikey
yeah think i need to use more protection. although ive got a new wire brush too. got some more done today. 1 wheel is stripped ready for primer and paint, 2 wheels are half stripped and the other hasnt been started on yet. had work half of the day so couldnt get a lot done. and got work tomorrow too. ejparrott
You do need more protection! We had a volunteer on the narrowboat took to hospital a few years ago when a wire came off a brush. Pieced the skin and got in the bloodstream - not good!
discomikey
Nasty. on the subject i have been into A&E this evening. although nothing to do with lack of PPE. i hit my finger with a hammer whilst steadying a spike. well more precisely, i sammiched my finger between hammer and spike. flapped my skin. on the bendy part of my index finger. right up to the bone. so whenever i bent my finger down, my knuckle flesh stayed still but my finger moved greating a huge gap. nice. anyway. all ok now. BUT. means no spraying paint, as luck will have it, its my trigger finger!
Landy-Novice
Nasty. on the subject i have been into A&E this evening. although nothing to do with lack of PPE. same here, but to do with no PPE.. i never knew you could get rust rings in you eyes.. <--- thats what i now look like! anyway. this LR No 6 to fund brian. what you going to do to brian? gold leaf him. discomikey
it was to fund his rebuild after my crash, plan was to build this up first, but i got a chassis early and cheap and built brian up first, although i do now need to pay dad back some money. discomikey
right, so now my finger is on its way back to full health, (sort of) i can now do things again so got the bulkhead prepped, and ready for paint. sealant brushed into all panel joints 2 coats of high build zinc phosphate primer and set on the first coat of Bronze green. although the rain came and 3/4 of the way through painting the first coat, i had to stop. dammit! but got a good even thick coat on the interior side of it. and on the top of the outside and a couple of my healing finger, showing the extent of the flapping. you could see bone
discomikey
hello, unfortunately over the last 12 months i have been extremely busy with uni work, and other commitments. I have carried out more work on the project although it is way way behind schedule. i was expecting to finish it within 6 months. instead i had to actually do some uni work , became the chairman for the Harper 4x4 Club and therefore it was compulsory to attend every off road event with Brian. (expensive and time consuming) due to this i have kind of ruined Brian too. It soon became apparent my curiousity got the better of me and i pretty much tried to tackle everything at all the off road sites i went to, following challenge trucks in a (off road mod concerned) pretty much standard series 3. He now needs another respray, and suffered a magnitude of off road related mechanical failiures. (and also nearly got stolen) and now ive gone and blown his gearbox!!! (it would appear it suddenly, yet for reasons i cannot explain, decided to leak ALL of its gearbox oil within 30 miles of setting off for home about 2 weeks ago) and yes it did have oil in it previously. you can see where i set off from. over a litre of EP90 on the pavement. yet no leakage up to it, and leakage away in a rapid way. more on that another time soon... Back to the series 2 i have rebuilt the gearbox in that just to be sure, Layshaft bearings were grumbling and i had never driven it so i thought i had better be safe than sorry. I replaced the rear corner panels on the tub, the floor and all tub crossmembers and top hat supports painted all interior panels and started with the sound deadening and future proofing. Pictures will come up as soon as i find a way to reduce the size of the images quickly.
