DrRob
What's the best (and most cost effective!) primer to use on recently welded metal? Doing RR boot floor soon and getting the shopping list together Thanks! Rob
Bowie69
I tend to just use a zinc-rich primer, but to stop water getting where it shouldn't, use a good seam sealer over welds/joins before painting, only way I have found to really eliminate recurring rust. DrRob
Cool. Which seam sealer ? Used paintable B&Q sealant before now...
Bowie69
Any motor factors should stock it, I tend to use the brushable stuff rather than tubes. Just ask for seam sealer and they know what you are talking about
Landy-Novice
Cool. Which seam sealer? may i recommend tiger seal? (P.S don't get it on your hands, it wont come off!)
muddy
Tiger seal is NOT seam sealer, do not use it on all joins it will not come apart! (as you know james!) use if for sticking stuff you want stuck till the end of the world. (in fact the stuff will apprehend cockroaches) Seam sealer is much better to deal with. I have just bought 5 litres of red oxide and and 5 litres of grey oxide gloss from a company called paintmaster, it sticks well and the gloss is a decent finish, they also do machinery enamels and skip paint etc very helpful plus the 10litres of paint was only £25 I dont usually pay more than a tenner for a pot (500ml???) of brush able seam sealer. Will.
Bowie69
Yep, a litre is about 12 quid her. tetrosyl I think it is....
Ratty43
Grey stripe is a good one although I'm pretty certain they are all PU sealant be they Tiger Seal or Grey Stripe. Certainly all of them are incredibly difficult to remove. When it comes to priming bare metal look at the Tractol cold galvanising paint, it's supposed to come close to the properties of hot dip galvanising although I'd take that with a pinch of salt. DrRob
Thanks for all your replies. Very helpful for a welding repair novice
cackshifter
I'd recommend bondaprimer in response to the original question - it seems to stick well and is tolerant of dodgy preparation within reason. Nigel
