harrypalmer68
My 1995 V8i (no LPG) has just failed its MOT on emissions. I know this one can be a can of worms, any one got any ideas?
matt bristol
under what criteria has it failed? eg no point changing a MAF if its burning oil
mikeyb13
Is it a 7 seater?
ballcock
Is it a 7 seater? Does this have a big effect on emmisions?
harrypalmer68
It is a 7 seater (two in front, three in back plus rear dickie seats). Stupidly I left the emissions report at home this morning but I think it was burning oil.
harrypalmer68
So its the Lambda value that's causing the problem. Needs to be between a min. limit of 0.970 and a max. limit of 1.030 an is currently running at 1.036.
HoSS
so its a smidge too lean, just needs adjusting. I could tell you how to do it if you had Megasquirt, but i've no idea how to adjust the stock system.
mikeyb13
Does this have a big effect on emmisions? Yes it does. If its a 7 seater its not classed as a passenger vehicle and only needs a basic emissions test not a cat test.
mikeyb13
There is an adjustment screw on the Maf. its hidden under a round metal bung
harrypalmer68
Thanks for the responses, I'll try adjusting the mixture and take it back for a re-test. Is there any way that I can judge when the mixture is correct?
mikeyb13
I used the emission tester at work and adjusted it while it was on the machine
harrypalmer68
Thanks. The MOT station is a sole trader on my trading estate so might be willing to let me use his.
ballcock
Yes it does. If its a 7 seater its not classed as a passenger vehicle and only needs a basic emissions test not a cat test. Does this mean you do not need a cat fitted?
teabag
If it came with a cat/cats from the factory then yes it needs them for the MOT and disco are tested in class 4 just like any other "people carrier" type vehicle. Class 4... Cars, including 3 wheeled vehicles more than 450kg unladen weight, Taxis, Minibuses and Ambulances up to 12 passenger seats, Goods Vehicles not exceeding 3000kg Design Gross Weight (DGW), Motor Caravans and Dual Purpose Vehicles
Ally V8
I would look for a small exhaust leak before fiddling with anything else.On both induction and exhaust sides....
harrypalmer68
Thanks, I wondered about the exhaust last night and certainly worth checking.
mickeyw
I was going to suggest replacing the air filter, as a clogged up one can often mess with the emissions. However if that was the case it would be running rich rather than lean. I haven't heard of a car failing an MOT for being too lean before. Are we sure the lambda reading is in fact too lean? Also just because a vehicle left the factory with a cat fitted it doesnt mean it needs it for mot, if it doesnt require a full cat test it doesnt need a cat. mikeyb13
Read the bottom left for the definition of a passenger vehicle

Quite right . ... but as this is a V8 thread which may require a full emissions test my previous statement stands true.

mikeyb13
It doesnt matter what petrol engine it has! If it has 7 seats it doesnt need a full emissions test it only needs a basic emissions test therefore your statment is false.
harrypalmer68
I changed the air filter about three months ago as part of a full servic but I'll certainly check it.
