ejparrott
Recent discussions about running veg oils and FIP pumps got me thinking, how do you field test a lift pump (mine is a 200 TDi Disco) to ensure that it still working and that the FIP isn't drawing the fuel from the tank? Bluemoon
Take the inlet to the fuel filter off, put it into a container and turn engine over, there should be fuel in the container. Brian

CwazyWabbit
and without disconnecting pipework? Depends, you could open the bleed screw on top of the filter housing and pump the lift pump by hand watching to see if any fuel comes out. Of course that doesn't check if the arm has fallen off and also won't work if the cam is in the wrong position. You could remove the lift pump and move the arm by hand.... Anything that involves turning the engine over will run the risk of introducing air into the system I would have thought.
LandyManLuke
- Unscrew fuel filter - put bucket/big jam jar/etc under fuel filter housing - Crank engine, with stop solenoid disconnected. - fuel should spew out of filter housing, everywhere except in the bucket. especially all over you. Shouldn't really matter on a TDi though, they don't care about a bit of air in the system as far as I've noticed.
ejparrott
What about clear fuel line between lift pump and filter, would you see fluid moving when you pumped the handle? LandyManLuke
I agree, when I've done it the way I described, putting the (reasonably) full fuel filter back on has been sufficient to get it to start, and bleed itself of any trapped air. elbekko
I've ran out of diesel a few times (*ahem* ), always took a spot of cranking and flooring the pedal, but easily came through it, so they don't mind a bit of fuel out of the filter
GBMUD
Open the bleed screw on top of the filter housing. If the lift pump is delivering fuel faster than the injector pump is using it you will get fuel being pumped out. If not then you have a problem. In reality you would notice a performance issue if the lift pump was U/S. Chris
