Alternative axles: Patrol and HDJ80

Hi all,

I have been thinking about the idea of fitting wider/beefer axles to a Landy.

In Spain the choice seems to be both Y60 Patrol and HDJ80 axles.

Because of Landys offset T-box I have read (cant remember where) that the thougher combo was Patrol front ant HDJ80 rear (Patrol rear has centered diff).

I have been searching for track width info on the net. Y60 and HDJ80 are about 1600mm and Y60 1465/1435mm. Is this data correct? Is a LR coiler (1486mm) wider in axles than a Y60?

Is the front Y61 axle as though as the Y60 unit?

Have searched in my old magazines.

According to 4x4 SoloAuto from February 1991, Y60 Patrol SWB has a front track of 1580mm and rear 1585mm. Roughly 4" more than LR coilers.

I have magazines at the basement, ant my parent´s in law and at my brother´s house. I´m sure I have data for HDJ80 and Y61, but have not located them yet.

Front patrol vs Rover one

Does anyone have a picture side by side of a RR vs Patrol or Patrol vs HDJ80 CVs?

You mean this one, from our very own forum!

Have no drawing for HDJ80 item, but data says outer diametre is 105mm

Land Rover AEU2522 (suposed to be the beefer LR one)

Why should I go Patrol if the Toyota is bigger? Why not use AEU2522 if it´s only 7mm smaller that Y61 unit?

If I go ahead with the Patrol/HDJ80 axle combo, what type of oil should I use for servicing them? Same EP90 as in Landys?

Y61 axles use 75w90 gear oil.

I've got them on my tray back Range Rover. Been using these axles for the past months and abused alot. Currently running 36" Fedimas and no breakages so far but am upgrading to TSL 38s soon. Hopefully they will hold on

I have found a pic at your web, and yes, you have centered rear diff. How about vibrations? It looks that you are still using a Rover offset t-box.

Yep, that's my beastie :)

No vibrations, maybe because of it's 105" wheelbase and the wide yoke prop shaft.

This weekend we competed in Noto, SIcily. Terrain there is mainly rock and soil. We had no problems at all with the axles and we're running 36" Fedimas with plenty of abuse.

Most vehicles there are set up with Y60 or Y61 axles. Most people I spoke to that run these type of axles recon these are the best budget axles that can withstand punishment.

RCV also make upgraded shafts and CVs and they are guaranteed at 42" tyres.

Our 38s should be on this weekend and will be competing again on the 14th of April.

Will keep you updated.

Despite beeing bigger in size maybe Toyota ones use lesser material or has stress concentration points in it´s design.

This is Rover´s AEU2522

What about 101 ones? I supose those will need bigger chrome balls.

101 cvs are 115mm in diameter, so you would definately need bigger chrome balls, swivel housings, stub axles etc.

Try bluprinting standard AEU2522,s before you get too carried away with committing to axle swaps.

Y60/Y61 axles look easy to adapt, are affordable (about 500 Eur each is spanish scrapyards), and are wider, meaning that they will allow extreme suspension lifts and still be road legal.

It seems that Rover axle is not easy to convert to "XLink" (how should I spell that: "exs"link, "cross"link?) but there is a kit for the Nissan axle. Fit locking pin and it will behave like standard, take it out and have super long travel suspension.

Just imagine a Disco MkI with front XLink on Y61 axle, rear XLink with HDJ80 rear axle with Discovery Series II trailing arms+Watts linkage. Change locking pins of both XLinks with dog clutches and you will have a refined road biased car that could be converted into a twisting machine by operating just two small levers. Add two sway bars from x-eng with more dog clutches in place of free wheeling hubs and it will be even better.
