o_teunico
Hi all, I have seen that the end of the main box output shaft is tappered, but neither in the workshop manual or in the thread covering LT230 swap in this forum says anything about a nut locating the input gear. Why?
Retroanaconda
Probably to do with it's use in other British Leyland motors of the day, where it wouldn't have a transfer box fitted to it but a tail housing and some form of output flange. This may have necessitated a nut.
pat_pending
The threads are used to secure the tool for pushing the rear mainshaft collar on. The collar's an interferance fit and takes considerable force to locate. As also mentioned, the LT77 started life as a rear wheel drive car gearbox that would have needed a flange on the end. CwazyWabbit
The input gear is held in place by it's taper roller bearings, also worth noting that the R380 gearbox that was the next gearbox does not have this thread on the shaft.
jbs
LT77's were used in all sorts of British leyland vehicles from the L/R to SD1 rovers and beyond John
bill van snorkle
As above, but I have seen a modification that uses a different rear cover plate with a projection that surrounds the thread, forming what is basically an Archimedes screw pump to feed oil into the gear and shaft to prevent corrosion fretting. o_teunico
Same box for various applications. That makes sense. Thanks.
ashtrans
Same box for various applications. That makes sense. Thanks. The 2 wheel drive LT77 mainshaft is totally different, the one in the photo is only 4 wheel drive, The thread is just for assembly tooling, Dave
