200TDI gearbox oil thickness

Recommended Posts

Can I use a thicker oil in my 200tdi disco, reason I ask is once the oil warms up say after around 10 miles driving, it becomes more and more difficult selecting gears, I did cheange the gearboxe oil around 3 months ago with the correct grade, but this made no difference, I’m thinking the oil is just not thick enough and once warm to weak.

One option: My 200 tdi Discovery is very difficult to change gear from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd. Why?

A common fault with these boxes is a thrust washer in the 1 - 2 synchro assembly splitting in half and blocking movement. Rebuild the gearbox and replace both thrust washers in the 1 - 2 assembly.

Another:

After a long run in my Discovery, when the gearbox gets hot, the gear lever becomes stiff when moving from side to side. Why?

The nylon cage at the end of the selector rail can swell when hot, and cause friction. To rectify this, the parts needs replacing. You can find this part here

Poped into my ;local LR specialist to ask for the plastic part FTC 2203 but it turns out someone has fitted a 380 gearbox into my disco at some point, is there reach diffrence between the two gearboxes what I mean is is there further for the slave cylinder push rod to travel in order to release the clutch from drive.

Ashcroft:

What oil should I use in my R380 gearbox? We recommend MTF94 in your R380 box.

It is the same part apparently...

What oil did you put in it?

Lots more FAQs here, decide which best match your symptoms: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=218

The poloyproperlene cup in the LT77 did look different but I will check to make sure,

Oil I changed again today Dextron 3 ATF horrible stuff, I have to say I was surprised the first time I changed the gearbox oil to find ATF in it, I thought surly this is a mistake this stuff is like water, but no LR said that’s the stuff.
