Ladge
Can I use a thicker oil in my 200tdi disco, reason I ask is once the oil warms up say after around 10 miles driving, it becomes more and more difficult selecting gears, I did cheange the gearboxe oil around 3 months ago with the correct grade, but this made no difference, I’m thinking the oil is just not thick enough and once warm to weak. miketomcat
Just to clarify it should be ATF in a LT77 not "oil". Mike
western
Difflock's EVO 1 fluid could be used or LR's MTF94 as alternatives, don't use anything thicker because the internal oil pump won't cope very well.
Ladge
MTF94 is what I put in same thing as atf but it is like water, point take on the pump hadn't thought of that
Ladge
Ok so my next question is any idea why it should get difficult once the gearbox oil has warmed to select gears
miketomcat
I thought MTF94 was only for R380's. Mike
Bowie69
One option: My 200 tdi Discovery is very difficult to change gear from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd. Why? A common fault with these boxes is a thrust washer in the 1 - 2 synchro assembly splitting in half and blocking movement. Rebuild the gearbox and replace both thrust washers in the 1 - 2 assembly. Another: After a long run in my Discovery, when the gearbox gets hot, the gear lever becomes stiff when moving from side to side. Why? The nylon cage at the end of the selector rail can swell when hot, and cause friction. To rectify this, the parts needs replacing. You can find this part here Both from Ashcroft: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=
Bowie69
Oil recommendation from Ashcroft: What oil should I use in my LT77 gearbox? We recommend ATF Dextron 2 or 3.

Simon Smith
My LT77 was the same when I tried MTF 94, switched back to good old ATF and it works perfectly. Just because LR say you can............
Ladge
Poped into my ;local LR specialist to ask for the plastic part FTC 2203 but it turns out someone has fitted a 380 gearbox into my disco at some point, is there reach diffrence between the two gearboxes what I mean is is there further for the slave cylinder push rod to travel in order to release the clutch from drive. Bowie69
It might be different box, but the selector housing could still contain the same part, unless Ashcroft have it wrong... Looks like you will want to be changing the oil out for MTF94 then...
Ladge
The poloyproperlene cup in the LT77 did look different but I will check to make sure, Oil I changed again today Dextron 3 ATF horrible stuff, I have to say I was surprised the first time I changed the gearbox oil to find ATF in it, I thought surly this is a mistake this stuff is like water, but no LR said that’s the stuff. CwazyWabbit
It's an R380 but you can confirm this by the location of the reverse. It should be behind 5th on an r380
JimDay
Thanks for that CwazyWabbit it is in deed an R380 in that case
