kevin50
Decide to have a go and change door hinges.Got the first bottom hinge off, the two hinges that bolt into the pillar have went in OK, But the two bolts that go into the door will not go through long enough to get a nut on the other end.Bolts are Excactley the same size as the ones that came out.Dont know whats went wrong as everything lines up.????Looks like Im going to have to leave it till tomorrow, getting too dark now. Scotts90
Have you got the hinges the right way around? They are tapered to match the angle at the top of the door skin
kevin50
It is just second hand hinges Im putting back on as the ones that are on are really knackered. I made sure the hinge I was putting back on was excactly the same way I took the old one off. It does match up perfectly flush with the door, one bolt comes through a couple of mill the other just say comes flush , I mpossible to get a nut on either. Scotts90
Are your replacement hinges any thicker on the casting?
Orgasmic Farmer
check the taper on the new bolts compared to the taper in the bolt hole on the hinge. It may be different and not aloowing the bolt head to sit as deep in the hinge??
kevin50
Are your replacement hinges any thicker on the casting? Both the same Mate, but top and bottom of each hinge are different shape. Maybe the are they Sided?? left and right?
Anderzander
They are sided ... That's what Scott meant when he said were they the right way around.
kevin50
Is the Tapered edge on the top of the hinge, the bottom different shape and thicker.
Anderzander
From memory they are both tapered - with the thinner edge being the top edge - and with the bottom hinge being thicker than the top. So a full set is 4 different hinges - with each one fitting in only one place.

Anderzander
I may have said it wrong - the top ones may be thicker. Daft question - but you're not trying to fit a top hinge on the bottom are you ? The holes for the mirror should give it away.

Im sure I fitted the replacment the excact same way as the old one was on. infact the other side has the thinner edge on top too.
Scotts90
Thinner edge to top is correct...has the skin popped open a bit and is now creating a gap between the skin and frame?
Anderzander
The bolts for the door side of the hinge are longer - you've not put the door bolts into the bulkhead by any chance ?

steve b
On the last set I fitted for someone the bolt head was too big to fit into the counterbore in the door section of the hinge , so I took some metal off the bolt head dia with a flap wheel cheers Steveb
