DiscoHere
Hi Guys I posted this before and got no replies but the problem seems to have developed a new turn lately. Hopefully it will jog some memories as I am sure I am not the only person to experience this 2003 TD5 Disco 2. Sometimes when I turn the key to start the vehicle it turns over constantly but will not start. Seems like the imobilsier has kicked in and prevents it starting. If I using the fob lock and unlock the doors it starts but occasionally with the 2 Flashing lights on the dash. In those cases I have just repeated the procedure until they car starts normally. It always has to date. However today when I tried to start the car all I got was a "Click" like the old fashioned sound when the starter was stuck. But on the second attempt it started perfectly. Later in the morning it did it again and and started on the 2nd attempt but with flashing dash lights . The above procedure did clear that fault though. We did have very bad weather yesterday in the form of rain and gales driving it but not sure if that would have had anything to do with it. All suggestions welcome Hugh
Team Idris
I guess my first rule would be not to assume the two are related. Take the faults as they come. If it sounds like a duff starter it could be a dead starter ? I was told the centre bearing was on the way out. I had a noise like a centre bearing. I changed it. The wheel was loose. "framed it" I should have known better and looked at the evidence...........
Shackleton
Good advice. I've experienced both, but non related. The first issue has happened to me twice; once when in a bit of a rush I was pulled it out of park while the car was still starting. It seemed to shock the ECU and all I got was a cranking starter. I left the car for about 5 min and all was well again. The other time was when my sister tried to start the car. I don't actually know what happened but the immobilisher light was flashing. I turned everything off and again waited a minute. All fine again. Your second symptoms sound like something I experienced on an ongoing basis (because of laziness). The spade connector on the live to the starter can come loose. Giving an intermittent start depending literally on how the car comes to rest. I've actually shook the car from the drivers seat and got a start But to compound it, the little plastic cover on the spade connection is itself a little loose on the connector, so sometimes when I'd push it all back on, I only moved the cover, and I hadn't made a good connection. If you find it loose, don't muck around, grab a needle nose pliers and crush the connector a little.
Anderzander
The starter contacts do wear out ... It's not an expensive do either: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=291196737071 There are cheaper ones on ebay that weren't there when I bought a kit from the people linked - it was spot on from them though . A bit fiddly - but you can do it from underneath leaving the starter on the car.
DiscoHere
Ok good points............thanks Hugh
sierrafery
it has nothing to do with the immobiliser cos immobiliser means no crank but the starter can be the cause of the starting problem too cos if the brushes or solenoid contacts are worn it can still turn well but the sparks/magnetic field fluctuations of the starter are disturbing intermitently the crank sensor and it will not fire... plug in a tester and if you have a "noisy crank signal" fault code logged you have to refurbish the starter
rdw
I had the same issue starting a few months back. Re-furbished the starter as advised here and it's been fine since and all for about £15 rdw
