heath robinson
Hi all. I'm after some air helper springs for the 110, but the only ones i can find are the airlift ones, and there doesn't seem to be a simple option to run them off a compressor. The ones from the states are nice and cheap, but don't fit 110s. Ideally I'd like to be able to control it on the fly, is there a system that'll do that? Any advice/thoughts/experiences gratefully received! Cheers Jake
heath robinson
Also, I'd really prefer to get a separate compressor so I can do tyres etc. as opposed to a single dedicated one for the springs.
tacr2man
I looked at them , and Firestone dont do that design under their brand any longer , the airlift is the only one . I have decided to go another route , as the boge hydromat has finally died on my 110 , and are NLA at anything like sensible money . The way that will best suit is using the 130 small diameter helper spring set up . I also intend to fit the dual shock turrets on the front and put the air springs in there , as my front end weight is quite variable , with either the 2nd spare on the bonnet , or not , and also with the snow plough or without . I already have OBA and a tank so plan to put a couple of guages with electric valves in line so that I can inflate or deflate to suit . Orgasmic Farmer
JST from this parish runs them on his 110. I will point him over in this direction....
heath robinson
Thanks guys. The 110's got pretty soft +2" springs at the moment, and I really like the way it rides most of the time - it's got one of Si's unlockable ARBs, which is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread. 90% of the time it's fine, but occasionally it needs to cross the country with the back full of oak, or cross a muddy festival site with the back full of beer, and both of those make it a bit of a pig due to the arse sinking down. I looked at the helper springs, but they're not occasional enough, if you see what I mean. I don't want to make it harder for the most part, just have the option when it's needed. When it's loaded up, it sort of screams "pull me, I'm overladen" long before it actually is.
Guest
I have a set of the airlift 1000 helper bags, you don't need the compressor as you just pump them up via the tyre type valve. I have had a little trouble with mine, well actually the pads as did Tweetyduck although they were replaced for free. If I had my time again I would have gone for the helper springs and not the bags. heath robinson
Can't adjust the helpers though can you? Eg. there's no way of having them not affect the spring rate when under high axle twist. I guess that I'm trying to make it do all things at once, as opposed to be set up for any one specific thing, but that's the life it leads, it's worked bloody hard in a huge variety of ways. chris200100
Maybe why not just get rid of the springs on the back completely and replace with air bags like ones off a truck then you got best of both worlds.
tacr2man
you cant just put a set of airbags on , as there is a lot more involved than just pumping up till you get the correct ride height , factors such as shape of pedestal, and support area affects the "rate" etc . chris200100
Yes I know there's alot more that just putting airbags on, I just thought to mention it as a different route to go.
Ex Member
I keep having this plan to build an air spring that replaces the Boge unit.... One day.... One of the fine component developer in the UK should really take on this challenge. I'm running airbags in the 90 right now, but the central air spring would be much better. elbekko
IIRC from an earlier discussion the Boge sees a lot of force, so could be difficult to emulate with an air spring? Pop in a set of P38 springs, you'll have to make some perches, but they should be pretty close to what you need rate-wise.
western
IIRC the central boge strut can & has a older RR's bent the rear axle case.

This is my plan for the 90, using an air spring, make mounts that pick up on the A frame crossmember, and some form of fabricated mount on the A frame fulcrum. Probably picking up on the 2 bolts, with something to stop the mount bending in the middle (so the force is taken by the castings and not the 4 bolt ends). It is just a matter of making up a couple of adapter for the spring mounts.
