Defender 90 Gearbox fault help

Recommended Posts

Hi

I convinced my neighbours to buy a defender about 3 years ago I think its a td5 2011/2012 reg.

They have had a series of issues. Originally a battery drain issue which turned out to be from a poorly installed towbar. Recently though a much more serious issue occured where they could not get it out of first gear.

They have done 12k miles since purchase from main dealer. It had roughly 13k on the clocks when originally bought.

They took it to their local dealer who are charging them £3000 for a gearbox and around £1000 for fitting.

This sounds ridiculously expensive especially the fitting cost as I expect a decent mechanic could swap the box out in 3 to a max 5 hrs.

Anyone got any ideas of whether this sounds right or reasonable?

Many Thanks

J

It sounds insanely unreasonable; have a look at ashcroft's charges, even if you get it shipped to them you'd be quids in - £1080 +VAT = 1296 for a fitted rebuilt gearbox including a new clutch http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/manual-gearboxes/r-380.html. Ashcrofts are generally reckoned to be one of the best. incidentally that price is for a td5. If it is 2011 or 2012 it's a Puma - that would be £1614 as it's a 6 speed Getrag box

Better still, that response is from Dave Ashcroft - he's willing to help someone for free rather than charge them for a replacement. It's always good to see an honest trader; Dave has been kind enough to give me advice in the past and his dad Ian insisted on giving me the old (albeit second hand but in mint condition) parts for the transfer box for me to remove an overdrive, and wouldn't even accept a tenner for a pint or two. Good guys.
