cackshifter
Hi, I have just realised I have had a second instance of the clutch return spring break. This is the 'new type' clothes-peg type return spring, and they break on the pedal side of one of the coils. Amazingly, they continue to work on one coil, but I have had one half ping out on to my foot in traffic. Both springs are(were) original so are nearly 20 years old, 115k and 180k miles. The symptoms are that when viewed one of the coils will look right, the other decidedly wonky, and the pedal doesn't feel very smooth. I'd recommend just giving it a quick look now and again, especially if your head is in the footwell for any other reason(!). The plastic bits seem no worse, and you just need a new spring to fix it, but I have to say I had to take the pedal out to get the new spring on - younger stronger more patient owners may have better luck.
Maverik
There was a post a while ago where zip ties where utilised to hold the spring in the partially coiled position to allow it to be installed without pedal removal. Interesting observation.
oneandtwo
I have found that the two bushes wear away and allow the spring to contact the metal making slight creaking noises. Not sure on pedal removal, it takes about 20 seconds to swap the spring out with long nose pliers and the pedal in the down position
steve200TDi
Yes, I think it was me! Here's how I installed mine! Steve
cackshifter
Ok, OneAndTwo you are obviously stronger, but I will def try the zip tie solution, thanks Steve
steve200TDi
Obviously I put it in a vice first, then added the cable ties! Good luck!
Happyoldgit
This spring in my last Puma creaked from when the vehicle was new and was replaced along with the bushes after it pinged out more than once. The new one creaked and needed fairly regular squirts of silicone to keep it quiet.
