But it is an easily transferable part - you can fit it to another vehicle if you replace yours, or you can sell it on separately for a large sum. So, yes it's expensive, but it is a life-long investment with good fuel (and ear) saving and a high residual value.

A slight warning on 2nd hand overdrives...

I bought my unit on Gumtree for £800, it is one of the earlier units with less of the later refinements for lubrication etc. I had to put in a fair bit of time and some cash to get the thing running, outright cost I probably saved a 100 or so pounds, but if I did it again, I'd get a new unit off the bat 100%. Just a lot less hassle and you've got complete confidence in the unit.
