  1. I'd be more worried about the VR sensor than the actual trigger wheel - if I damage my trigger wheel I'll probably wreck my pulley assembly and put myself out of action anyway. In fact, the trigger wheel would probably be the easiest bit to fix - just a bit of hammer work (mine's 1mm steel with the teeth bent over). The VR sensor is mounted fairly well up on the left hand side. I guess it could get hit by debris thrown up off the road (more likely than off road), but there's no sign of things having hit up there in the past. Off road I was concerned that mud and gravel could get thrown round into the VR sensor by the the trigger wheel, but judging by the experiences of others so far this isn't an issue. So far mine is still largely theoretical - the only bit that's on is the trigger wheel and that's been just fine. Hasn't been anywhere particularly demanding though.
  2. And not an unlikely one considering I had the pipes off when we changed the engine...
  3. If they're smart, fairly long randomly generated strings. Just to make it hard for you to nick
  4. Stephen - plugin issues aside, it would be well worth your while downloading the Firefox extension called 'Fasterfox'. It's pretty small as all it really does under the skin is tweak some of the more advanced browser settings (you could do it yourself, but you'd be into serious techy stuff). It makes Firefox even quicker
  5. Ah! New you'd see the light one day, Nige Steering guard? Barring that, it sounds like you'd need to look at a different solution. As TomG says, later RV8s had a timing sensor on the flywheel which I'd guess Megasquirt is able to decode. EDIS couldn't, so you'd have to go for the built in wheel decoder, but this has benefits anyway, like the ability, I think, to go coil on plug and do away with the HT leads. I don't know whether it's been done, but it seems perfectly feasible. You could compensate for the double revs by replacing the 36-1 (36 teeth with one missing) wheel with a 72-2 wheel, but I'm not sure whether the EDIS VR sensor would work reliably on a wheel that small (especially cramming that many teeth onto it), so again it's probably time to look at the built in wheel decoding which should cope quite happily with a suitably sane tooth arrangement. Crank position sensors that replace the dizzy drive definitely exist and can readily be ordered off some mainstream american websites (sorry, don't have a link handy - pretty sure Mallory do them), but I've only seen ones for Chevy engines. Never managed to find out if they would fit an RV8. If you can find one that does, problem solved It's well worth asking questions on the Megasquirt Forums - they're busy, so try to pick a relevant subsection (Megasquirt'n'EDIS would probably be a good bet). Lots of helpful guys on there, and there's probably at least a couple of people who've already done what you're thinking of.
  6. It occurs to me that I may be jumping to conclusions... If my heater matrix was leaking that much, I'd be losing a lot more coolant that I am (which isn't very much at all), and the fact that the water is warm on the inboard side of the footwell could well be down to, well....there's this big V8, and an autobox...and an exhaust downpipe...on the other side of the floor Course the water still came from some where in the first place, but I guess I'm just going to have to strip the carpets out, get everything dry and see if any more appears Well, I was going to take the doors off anyway...they need a lick of paint (well, nearside does - offside needs a new door). Sounds a bit OTT to me, though! PM on the way - sounds like a useful PDF to have on hand, even it doesn't turn out to be the heater this time. We'd never actually make it there, something'd break...
  7. I have a warm wet feeling Although fortunately only when I stick my hand under the carpet after a long run. Looks like my heater matrix has gone south How big a job is it? Dashboard out, I presume, and then there's getting hold of the right replacement in decent nick. My threats to break the wretched thing are starting to get serious...
  8. So as long as it's sitting at a nice sensible temperature and not boiling up I'm okay. Good - I'll leave it alone until I've traced the source of my wet footwell then.
  9. Should work for the standard stuff on ODB-II compliant vehicles (pretty much anything post '96). It won't work on most older vehicles (RR classic for instance is ODB-I - even if you can find a scanner for it, I think it's pretty poorly standardised). It also won't handle 'extended' features like air suspension, possibly some other toys found on higher spec land rovers. Should do all the basic engine stuff though. Maybe gearbox, too?
  10. Probably, but these are a little more discreet I don't really do stickers. The only other ones on the truck are the tax disc and a christian fish thing in the rear window.
  11. Well, that one's obviously not too bad yet. Changed the diff oil at the weekend and there was still plenty in there If my cooling system isn't currently properly pressurised, what nasty side effects would this have? Coolant not running through some of the smaller passages properly? Just wondering, because until I know whether the water inside is coming from the heater matrix I quite like not having any pressure...I'm not in a tearing hurry to have several litres of scalding hot coolant dumped over my feet while I'm driving
  12. Yes, you do need to install the plugin - the Firefox plugin will just be a small bit of software that hooks the browser up to Media Player (Microsoft only hook it up to Internet Explorer).
  13. Finally got round to putting mine in the truck. Last time I stuck my head round the door my bed was still empty though
  14. Mine does indeed have the tubular cross member - can't say for sure whether the lugs are welded on but I don't remember seeing any bolts. You're correct - EAS Range Rovers do not have a self leveller, the suspension is self levelling anyway. I don't run to a gas axe - a small cheapo angle grinder is about it I'll have another look under there tomorrow, but I don't recall it looking too hard to get at. On the plus side my petrol tank is well out the way in the wing, I've got much less explosive LPG tanks under the boot
  15. If you've got a photo of them doing something illegal, I see no problem with posting it with their number plate visible. As far as I'm aware (I'm not a lawyer, though) the danger is only in making accusations for which you have no clear proof. As to posting the photo without any accusation, while that quite possibly sidesteps libel issues, it has a danger all of it's own - it would not be obvious to anyone unfamiliar with the forum that we were condemning the actions depicted. Quite possibly we would appear to be glorifying them.
  16. In either case: going up hill Auto going down hill Manual...
  17. You mean if both are used properly and with mechanical sympathy the LT230 will last longer, but if their both abused the Viscous will take it for longer? Yep, makes sense
  18. Ah, so that's what's bad about them. A few people have told me they're supposed to be rubbish, but I really like mine - it's just there when you need it, and not when you don't. Suppose it takes some of the skill out of the driving, but I do more green laning than off roading and I'd rather not spin my wheels if I can avoid it! I can see that it lacks the precise control you might want on something like a challenge event, though.
  19. Bolt, meet Mr. Angle Grinder... I suspect one or two of the bolts might be a bit tricky to get to, at the ball joint end, but I have another job lined up which can be conveniently combined with this one - replacing the boot floor. That should make access considerably easier
  20. Idle thought...if I got hold of an A-Frame, I could get the old bushes pressed out and polybush it and fit it myself, instead of paying someone else to do the whole job. Any idea what an A-Frame would cost, and whether there's any difference between the A-Frame on a coil (with self leveller) and EAS (without) Range Rover? Is it just a daft idea?
  21. Same thing happened to me back in october That was the day after a laning trip too... Only just got the truck back on the road.
  22. Actually, we think that was probably Google indexing the site
  23. Um...haven't got round to pulling the carpet up in the other footwell...don't even want to think about that
