  1. I think it's a waste of money to try and improve the mpg with what you have said. With how much they cost, you will never recoup the costs of buying them in fuel savings. I think the best you're going to see on a regular basis is around 20mpg under petrol power, maybe a few more miles to the gallon on long motorway hauls but that's about it. Otherwise, it's looking like a nice Land Rover.
  2. What rate of wear can someone expect from the 7.50 Michelin XCL? And no, they aren't on some fire breathing TVR powered 5.0 machine.
  3. Okay. Let us know what the diagnoses of the engine is.
  4. I don't know if you've tried, but if you ever felt like it you may be able to source "proper" bulkhead and matching set of S2 wings. Have you tried asking on the Series 2 Club forums? If your mind is made up then disregard this post.
  5. I'm going to assume you mean the rocker cover breather - the filler is actually the long pipe up on the side of the engine. For it to be blowing oil out, there is some crankcase pressurising. This could be caused by cylinder leaks, from piston ring failure or general wear. Or it could be from a head gasket failure (if it happened suddenly). What is a concern is how this is combined with loss of power, smoke (possibly boiling oil?), knocking/rattling and a lack of power. These all suggest that the engine is dead. Did you check the oil level prior to setting off? What is the oil level now? Does the engine turn over freely?
  6. If I carried all that regularly, I'd have little space left in the 88. Is that for you or the Land Rover?
  7. As the above post says, you can do it. Just be warned, the purists won't be too happy - and you may get accused of having a ringer by those not in the know.
  8. And if you've never driven one, they're nothing like a car - if a bit closer to car-ness than the older models. Think agricultural.
  9. It's got the two piece drain channels on the bulkhead, suggesting that the bulkhead may be an early Series 3 example. If it is a Series 3, it's not going to be very different to a 2A that the reg plate claims it is. Story has it that the very last 2As (J plate) even had the Series 3 gearbox and door hinges. Don't think any had Series 3 bulkheads, particularly on G suffix. I think the only really early example is the likes of Steve Graham's pre-production S3.
  10. Ep90 doesn't leak out of my balls either.
  11. It's advisable to use an engine crane to remove the engine. This among imperial spanners and socket sets etc. would get it out. The engine weighs approx 250kg.
  12. That's what they do when you fill them right up. The breather/overfill pipe goes straight back up to the filler cap. Try running it with the cap removed from the filler. That will prevent a vacuum forming.
  13. What are you on about? Anyway, the Santana PS10 (now rebranded under Iveco as the Massif) is arguebly the current "model" of what was the Leaf-sprung Land Rover. I like them, 2.8 Iveco TD up front, earlier versions utilised the infamous and super strong Santana LT85 main gearbox. If I'm not mistaken, I think they even retained the selectable two and four wheel drive! I think in places they can be quite a competitor to the Land Rover Defender. Should be interesting if they suffer from EU regulations on crash impacts or not, if they don't then they could take over completely from what the Defender's current market is I think. Here's a of the six cylinder that mikey mentioned. 2.25 diesel with an extra two cylinders added. I like and want to know what the petrol version (if there was one) would be like.
  14. I think if the timing failed to advance the power would just fade away, and wouldn't cause kangarooing. I think the problem lies in fuelling, either to the carb or the carb itself. Have you checked the fuel pump's "silt container"? That may be full and causing fuel starvation. If the fuel tank was rusty as you say, debris could have entered into the fuel pickup and fuel pipes.
  15. Which is why I removed mine some time back. I have some new ones to go on, it's just a matter of doing it.
  16. Does it rev freely with no load applied to it? What did you set the gap to on the points? For "what carb" question, the Solex wasn't fitted to the later 2A models. It'll have had Zenith from factory. There are ways of fitting more exotic carburettors to these engines, like an SU or twin choke Weber if you fancy either.
  17. If the 200TDi starter is the same fitting as the 2.5 NA starter, then yes it should fit. I have a 2.5 NA starter on mine.
  18. Upsetting drivers? Have you seen the spray that can be given off without them in heavy rain, on er, lets say, the motorway? Think what a HGV can do in heavy rain, that's what yours will do in light rain. I must confess that my 88 lacks them at the moment. I want some though.
  19. I think you should be okay, the turbocharger is a silencer in its own right. Besides, lots of people remove the silencer on TDi Defenders and Discoveries anyway.
  20. Do you think they'll be drawing it in the sands next? Because it won't be "grown in Britain" much longer.
  21. I know where some of them keep in touch with each other. The "old one" is a pretty standard Series 3 109.
  22. Just thought I'd mention that your speedo will under read if it's one for SWB tyres (like 205/80) rather than LWB (like 235/85). So that'll need changing or you need to put on the new speed markers.
  23. Would it not be possible to bore out and sleeve the bores?
