  1. Can I get away without an oil cooler? Or does it desperately need one for some reason.
  2. Bit off the wall but what about more suspension lift and lower the engine and box in the chassis accordingly to retain prop geometry?
  3. Rod and piston, stitch the block back together. Off you go!
  4. Lots of food for thought here! Fetched the thing today, it came from Ben at York Land Rover Services on the A19. I'm very pleased with it, it has no rot whatsoever and is fitted with a new big yoke front prop and a set of brand new genuine springs and shocks from a puma. What I think ill do is fit my 200tdi from under the bench to get it mobile, then set about looking for a big lump
  5. Sold a series 3 for a mate recently, very tidy but the chassis had had a few patches. Loads of new bits, he decided he wanted £1200 for it so I said I'd put it up for £1500. A bloke rings up for a viewing He turns up and introduced himself as John. He was driving a 300tdi disco with numerous John Craddock stickers, towing an Ifor tri axle. He had a go in the Landy, said the brakes were poor (which they weren't) and that the engine must be knackered because it was breathing so heavily (it wasn't) He said he wanted it to tow a mini digger about because he and his brother are builders He then offered £800, we ended up at £1350 He then insisted that he took the whole V5 and left me with the yellow slip, having filled it in with the name 'John Cradley' (Can you see where I'm going with this) Anyway it ended up on the John Craddock website for £3995 Not bothered about the profit margin but I thought the buying technique was a little underhand!
  6. +1 on the injector seal theory. In my experience the fuel pumps either work or they don't.
  7. Power is around 150bhp but it's the torque figure of 500lb/ft that appeals most. Some have a Bosch VE too
  8. Oh I can trump that quite easily; two cows in a Bateson behind the 2.25 diesel series 2, uttoxeter to bakewell. You get good at the old low/second-high/first manoeuvre. I've been talking to my old employer about the cummins engines and he reckons its the way to go. Especially if I retain the ZF 5 speed box. How strong is an LT230? Can't be bad seeing as people bolt standard ones on to the back of a tremec etc.
  9. Haha love the auto correct, that should say the dogs proverbials!
  10. If you're blowing holes with your stick, you haven't chopped the rotten bit out far enough! Ive done some quite presentable stick welding on chassis before with an ancient 180a Oxford. That said, I love my 400a murex mig. It's the rubbish
  11. I thought that but having borrowed a friend's trooper I'm not so sure. The engines have balls but seem really, really lazy if that makes any sense.
  12. Does anyone go to the trouble of fitting Transit Dis into land rovers any more?! I think an engine that would have my power/torque requirements would make short work of an R380 anyway.
  13. How dead is the engine you've got? Not a lot that isn't mend able about a tdi.
  14. That's the bind, i can think of lots of lovely engines that would be a nightmare to fit. Mazda is a good shout
  15. So, I sells the 300tdi 90 for a 3.1 trooper (I know I know) in search of more grunt and a better heater... Which is mostly successful but a) although low down torque is better, it isn't that much better and b) it's just not a blummin Land Rover. Cue an ex army 110 with no engine in What do I fit? Points to bear in mind are: I like fabrication and oily bits but I'm no electrics genius so BMW M57 etc are a no go... I'd like at least 150hp and oodles of torque Fuel consumption is not really an issue but I don't do petrol so no Small block Chevys Don't mind a remote transfer box Whole job mustn't cost more than a grand Ill start the ball rolling with a cummins 6bt: I like the engine, and you can buy a whole daf 45 for £700, fit the engine and box with a short prop to the LT230 All I'm trying to make is a towing beast, it'll rarely leave the road but if it does I don't want to get stuck, hence no clever buggers saying just buy a 7.5 tonner Over to you Roland
  16. I run 185/60r12 on my CT166 and they are forever going deformed or flat. I'll fit 13s when I can afford.
  17. Thank you for a really comprehensive answer, that picture explains a lot too. I've no doubt I will be ordering some as funds allow, I really like the design. Cheers
  18. Right so if an x joint is a ball in a poly housing in two halves, with the halves bolted either side of the existing bit of classis, the housing must not be truly spherical in order to be spherical when there is a bit of chassis in between, like a spacer? I suppose that bit is the same thickness on all land rovers Is there any adjustability in them, could you put a shim in between the ali housing and the poly bit. For example? Roland
  19. Knowing little about this kind of thing, would a springy half shaft not be better than a hardened one?
  20. An interesting note but I did the clutch on an 04 disco today and the pipe that goes around the back of the engine was completely redundant, it was in place but no hoses were attached to it. I binned it.
  21. pfft always one CW. at least i got you out to have a look!
