I'd say its a swivel pin issue as well. Certainly doable from a DIY perspective if you're keen.

There used to be a boat hire place in Ardmair. Not sure if its still there but if its open, well worth hiring and heading out for a tour in the bay.
-
It's embedding something rather than linking to a website im looking to do. They're 3D models from the sketchfab website and with a bit of luck I'll be able to scan the 90 at several points along the way of her rebuild.

Perfect, thanks!

Thanks for looking into that @western. The two parts i'm looking at are HRC2373 and HRC2574, are those of any use for a '99 TD5?
-
that's what i'm hoping but all the diferent parts numbers for the swivel pin housings are quite confusing.
-
Does anyone know if these will fit my RHD 90TD5 1999MY?
I have ABS fitted but i don't know if that affects the swivel pin housing i need to get.

I'm late to this thread but i've had a great time reading it so far - i'm also adding the term "shonk" to my daily vocabulary.
Where is the best place to find such interesting articles for sale?

At least you'll always know where the handbrake is in a proper Defender!

The switch for the handbrake is apparently hidden by the driver's shin. I wonder if you'd even find it without fumbling for those lethal few seconds? Absolute insanity.
It's just to the right of your knee but you have to lower your head to find it. It certainly isn't something i would want to have to find quickly when i'm in a stick situation.

Bbcode should still work I think.

Or not...
I couldn't get it to work pre-forum upgrade either but then i'm no expert so could be doing something wrong.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask the question, but does the new forum support iframe or bbcode? I'm looking to embed some 3D models into my chassis replacement thread but i'm not 100% sure how. Sketchfab only gives me those two options.

Slow progress over the past couple of weeks. Got the rear axle pretty much stripped down today, just need to get the brake lines and ABS sensors out of the way then i'll need to somehow detach the A frame. This are fairly well seized up so not sure how it's going to go.
On a different note, has anyone ever fitted these kits to their swivel housings: https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-LL1393BP ?
Edit: Also, does anyone know where i can find new swivel pin housings? Mine are mostly knackered with the caliper bolt threads shot to pieces. All i can seem to find are LHD versions like this one: http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4&item=390528966579&category=42609&pm=1&ds=0&t=1597243119000&ver=0

Fun fact - doing that almost certainly uses more fuel, especially in anything with an ECU.
During engine braking the ECU knows it doesn't need to put any fuel in at all and shuts off the injectors, whereas to keep the engine idling in neutral requires fuel.
I've often wondered about this. Does that mean that technically the engine isn't running as there's no power stroke but rather just turning over as a result of the connected drivetrain being driven by the wheels?

The image smoothing looks great for being on a static fixing. Might need to investigate one for myself....

@NaksWhat camera is being used round about the 19m30s mark? Is it gimbalised? Really like how you can see the bonnet lurching around but the camera stays nice and smooth.
Cracking scenery as well!

@Retroanacondawhat engine did you end up going for?

I think it must be dealer-specific as i didn't have to sign anything, they just put me on the insurance and off i went.

I can't remember quite how it worked but it did make sense to my brain at the time. The price tag, however, did not make sense.
-
It was quite loose and just came away without any real effort. Glad i did it as otherwise it might be in the central reservation of a dual carriageway right now. The other side was just as flimsy. Insane for a £50k+ motor.

First of all, and as my old Texan boss used to say in reference to his collection of guns: "If you know how many you have, you don't have enough." 😄
Are your vehicles used for business of personal purposes? I've just gone through the insurance process with our work Hiluxes and found it to be a bit of a nightmare, particularly for any-driver insurance. In the end i went with Admiral multi-car and named drivers for everyone.

I've had the new Defender for a 3 hour test drive this morning. I approached it with an open mind but i can honestly say i still don't get it. Not utility enough to be of any use in a working environment and not luxurious enough to be worthy of its price tag. I did like the halo camera parking aid. I did not like the build quality.

Does it make the same noise when you're coasting at speed i.e. no strain on the drivetrain by having your foot on the accelerator? Might be worth getting up to speed then putting your foot on the clutch to see what the noise does. Also stick it in neutral and report back. It could be something as simple as a propshaft UJ. Defenders are like giant acoustic chambers and noises can migrate across the structure disguising where its actually coming from.

Lochinver Larder are legendary for their pies - https://shop.lochinverlarder.com/collections/pies
I can 2nd this, the pies are beyond belief and you'll need the fuel for the next leg of the trip over to Ullapool.
I'll also echo what others have been saying re proper camp sites. It's insane up there right now with all the 'staycationers' and the locals have been getting a bit feisty! If you've got time, stay a night in Dornoch and go to their whisky castle. They sell good drams by the nip instead of the whole bottle so you get to taste some amazing stuff. Just leave some time the next day to sober up!

My RRS is in the main stealers next week getting some work done so i've booked a 3 hour unaccompanied test drive with the Pretender. If anyone wants any particular images taken then let me know.

Paime's 90 TD5 Chassis Swap
in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)

A small update for this week - finally managed to get the rear axle off the truck. What a nightmare it was. The castle nut on the rear a-frame ball joint was having none of it and after nearly 3 hours of trying i finally gave in and got the angle grinder out. Everything is booked in for blasting and painting now which will leave my garage clear for getting the chassis painted up. The next step after that is going to be putting my axles back on which means new bushes. I've read various opinions on here, but what would everyone recommend for every-day road use with a bit of gentle off-roading throught the winter? I don't need massive amounts of flex and i'm leaving towards the Superpro option.
