  1. Just fitted another V8 in the truck. This one has single front pipes rather than the twins id seen before. The manifolds are identical but the front pipes are single approx 50mm tube right from the manifolds. Does anyone know how these effect the power of the V8. Are they, as I would imagine, similar to the 4-1 tubular manifold that give god high RPM power at the expence of some low and mid?? Or are they closer to the twin front pipe setup?? Cheers. Steve.
  2. I just did a quick search and came up with this. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopi...mp;#entry285165 BTW, The front prop on a 200 disco and all the 300's is the same. 637mm
  3. Ive just heard that Tomcat might do a conversion where they weld up the oil filter holes, Cut off the main of the filter fitting lump and then fit bosses to the side of the front cover to plumb in the remote filter. Anyone had any experience of this? Or better still a photo??? Cheers. Steve.
  4. Its the other way round, The motor I have doesnt have a take off plate, The take off's for the cooler are built into the front cover. I was wondering if these had any sort of thermostat in them and would I be able to use these for the remote filter and just fit a blanking cap where the filter should be. I dont have room for a take off plate plus blanking cap. Cheers. Steve.
  5. Trying to fit a V8 with a serpentine front end (out of a 3.9 1997 disco) into my challenge truck and due to a whole heap of factors I have clearance issues with the oil filter and axle (yes, sounds familiar as I had the same trouble with the 4.2) I don't even think there is going to be room for a remote filter take off plate and cap where the oil filter would usually be fitted. So I was wondering, if I fit a cap to the housing where the filter should sit, could use the oil cooler lines (which are tapped straight into the front cover on the serp) to plumb in the remote filter?? or do they have some sort of temp thermostat to stop flow when the engine is getting up to temp?? If there is a thermostat has anyone ever looked into the possibility of removing one to use these pipes for a remote filter?? Cheers. Steve.
  6. Ive just taken one out and have 90% of what you need, Two of some bits and a lot of it brand new! I'll get some pic's this PM.
  7. Thats a shame. I cant beleive that theers not enough AWDC members with road legal vehicles. Enough of them do the Tay, Muddy truckers, 3 peaks etc which need to be road legal. My thoghts are more along the lines of it being the week before the Tay and a howling wolf round not giving enough time to turn the truck round, Especially if theres a problem. It does however make me glad I keep mine taxed and tested as it doesn't tie you to certain events and keeps your options open.
  8. I use a disc axle on the rear of a drum brake vehicle using a drum brake limiting valve and its fine. Never get any trouble with the rears locking and the brakes work very well with little pedal pressure. Are you sure you problem is the rear brakes are not limited enough??? Could be under performing front brakes (dirty/rust discs, half sized callipers etc etc) that's the issue.
  9. Yep, Thankyou Tony. From what I can workout from that pic it cant leave the belt running around the std alt pulley for more than 90 degree's with Air con fitted. Must be enough tho if they come from the factory like it. It looks like I need to make a pretty simple bracket to mount on the back of the alt bracket and a longer Multi V belt, Job done.
  10. Hi, Was wondering if anyone has the exploded parts diagrams with the part numbers for a serpentine V8 discovery with and without air con?? Am trying to sort the fitting of a 24v alt to a V8 and would like to see if the air con bracket and idlers will be any advantage or not. Something like a 97/98 disco 3.9 V8 should fit the bill at a guess. Many thanks. Steve.
  11. JAse, I asked this a while back and didn't get much response. Dave knew the size of the addaptor in the box but not much info on the pipe fittings. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=30553&hl= Which do you have, The ones with an O ring or with a curved nose and sleeve nut (Like a backwards JIC). Think David from Llama knows, Was just waiting to position coolers to get lengths of hoses then I was going to give him a call.
  12. Just been sizing up the best position to fit the rear brake limiting valve on my challenge truck. The original position is no good as the exhaust from the R/H bank now runs where it once was. So I will probably fit it towards the rear of the vehicle. Is the angle it is fitted at important??? I'm not sure what type of valve it is which doesn't help. Some are a simple pressure limiting valve, Others need to be fitted at a slight angle (some Ford escorts spring to mind) with the front higher than the rear as they have a sliding weight inside them that moves up a slope due to the deceleration forces and alters the amount of limiting on the rear brakes. The reason I ask is I noticed the Valve on the truck (A 1989 LR 90 by the way) was originally fitted at a slight angle. This could just be due to the position they had chosen but could also be needed to make it work correctly. So can anyone confirm 1, what type of valve it is? and 2, if it must be at this angle to work correctly or can I fit it any way I want? Thanks. Steve.
  13. Simex seem less than good, The boggers I now run Ive never used in the snow and the trucks in bits so I wont get to try them this year. The AT2's on the disco are brilliant.
  14. I love my twin motor but to be honest the XP is a pretty good upgrade and good value for money. Much better than the Bowmotor on a 8274. Go with the XP and you'll be happy with it. Dont keep winching when its about stalled or your batteries are flat and it will last fine.
  15. Is that a fact???? I think you will find there are good and bad garages exactly the same as there are good and bad builders, plumbers, solicitors, doctors pretty much every occupation. The trouble with working on cars/vehicles in general is there are so many variables, and two jobs are never the same. Plus you need mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and a whole host of other skills all in one job. There are very few other occupations that need such a wide range of skills. When it comes to dealing with the customer everyone is an expert or know's one that drinks in the same pub giving bad, miss informed advice. Everyone thinks there being ripped off when most of the time they are not. Were not all out to rip people off. There are some that are but I know that we try and offer a good fair service while still paying the bills and I think a majority of workshops are the same.
  16. I'll check on monday but im pretty sure thet The testers manual states that less than 3mm is a fail. No room for judgement its plain and simple. More than 3mm is a pass, less than 3mm is a fail so you MOT tester was right to fail them. Ring VOSA and they will tell you the same. Edited to say that I think Paintman is correct and 1.5mm could infact be the minimum for a fail. As said, I will check when I get to work on monday.
  17. Yep, As Nige say's. Nice work Carl.
  18. My challenge truck did................4500miles between MOT's early 07 and early 08 and its only ever used competing and playing. Should be a bit less this year!
  19. Ive got pretty good at turning the motor off now (been over quite a few times). Put it back on its wheels, turn the key and away to go, Often with a bit of extra smoke for a few minutes but usually ok.
  20. I would have theough the windscreen washer one would be way too small and the fuel vapour could possible do some damage internally. No ideas where you could salvage/recycle one from but if you do decide to buy new I can recommend Merlin Motorsport ( http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/ ). An excellent bunch of guys that will do anything to help. Steve.
  21. I think!!! And this is only from offering the bent tubes into place and sizing it all up our P&P cages are about the same fit for the windscreen hoop and a little closer fitting around the rear of the TC. Not sure how the lengths of the roof bars will work out but they are only bent and not notched (coz I asked for them that way) so it can be fine tuned to suit. Looking good Nige, Fits nicely and looks A1 quality!
