  1. @fmmv yeah going to use some Hylomar Blue on the gaskets, as for all gasket surfaces, they are in perfect condition!?! Which was a nice bonus! Have to say though, removing the old gasket for the water pump off the casing was an absolute pain! Took about an hour of careful scraping with a Stanley blade, same with the P gasket face on the block!
  2. Well spent this morning draining the coolant and striping away hoses, alternator and steering pump and got down to the x3 dreaded long bolts on the water pump (have heard some HORROR stories about these being seized and snapping) that hold the casing!?! Well ALL 3 cracked like PART POPPERS!!! Huge sigh of relief! So it turned out to be an easy off for ONCE!?! Anyway it was obvious that yes the "P" Gasket had failed due to age at a guess and more so with it being the old paper type. Replacement bits Water Pump with Gasket, P Gasket and new bolts are being delivered today about 12:30ish. So I can relax now and take my time over the weekend if need be? Only because the right hand and wrist ache like a B1tch as it's only a couple of weeks out of plaster and no where near the movement and flex it should have!?! So the rest of the day might involve popping pain killers like tic tacs!?!
  3. @simonb Having ordered ALL the parts to change the Water Pump ie Pump, Gasket and the various Bolts ready to hand over to my garage man (would normally do it myself, but due to recovering from a motorbike accident involving me breaking several ribs, chest bone, a vertebrae and my right wrist! My wife WONT let me work on the motor!?!). This morning i went to have an inspection of just where the coolant was leaking from, and it would appear it IS coming from the P Gasket area!?! Luckily i ordered this particular item with the rest of the bits. So hopefully all bases are covered (but it's a Land Rover so you just know it wont be)!?!
  4. @Mossberg You take them NASTY words out'a ya mouth!?!.......You DON'T think IT!!!.....You DON'T say IT!!!.......It's NOT true.....It NEVER happens!!!..... Are we CLEAR!?! 🙉🙈🙊
  5. I had been doing this every 6 months for the last 8 years!..... But i have just been informed by my local GP (Garage Person) this only works if it's running a HIGH TEMREATURE!?! 😕 For Rusty bits, split Pipes and cracked Exhaust a PLASTER will suffice!?!........Broken bits nearly always require SURGERY!?! So NOW we KNOW!?! 😊
  6. @fmmv Yep ALWAYS figure NEW Bolts whenever renewing anything! Learnt that lesson early on when working on the Landy!?! Saves soooo much time and heart ache! Coolant colour....Pink, Orange, Reddish!?!........Think we are all in the same field!?! Maybe wrong (and it has been known!?! My wife tells me often!!!), but i thought a while back, a few years back it was said that either colour coolant Pink OR Blue could be used in the 300Tdi??? This one was using PINK coolant when i got it some 15 years ago and has always used Pink coolant since without issue??? Oh and thanks for the replies so far guys, all appreciated
  7. @Peaklander This has always had the PINK coolant and reason for this diagnosis is as said, tracing fluid to water pump area plus when checking coolant bottle level, the level of coolant has dropped significantly. @Sigi_H Yeah pretty much figured/hope that is the case. NEVER understand when our Landys start feeling rough...... WHY we can't just give it a spoonful of CODLIVER OIL and an ASPRIN!?!....GOD life's Sooooo UNFAIR!!!
  8. Hi guys and gals, It's been a while since i've posted and been on here which generally means all is well!?!......... So as i'm here, guess what???....... Yesterday after having been out in the Landy (about a 6 mile trip), i parked up for 30mins and when i came back to it i noticed a reddish pool of liquid under the front of the Landy and fluid dripping from the front near side!?! After lifting the bonnet and tracing the flow of fluid best i could, it appears to be coming from the WATER PUMP!?!....... So my question is, is it Water pump Fail???...... Or GASKET fail???....... Will be replacing BOTH as a matter of course. My other question is what has caused the fail? Is it an age thing or do i need to be checking other areas too??? This is a 1995 DEFENDER 90 "M" Reg 300Tdi Any advice on Removal and renewal of Water Pump any pros and cons would be appreciated. Cheers all, Andy
  9. An update, we have somewhat of a result and at the same time managed to avoid what could have been a nasty incident!?!....... I went out to do some checking on the Land Rover and as i got close, noticed a wet patch on the tarmac (Front near side wheel on the inside)!?! I get down to look and see brake fluid splattered all up the inside of the wheel and dripping from the union that goes into the calliper! Thinking this had some how worked loose i tightened the union for it to still leak!?! I removed the copper brake pipe totally to inspect and all seemed good so decided to put it back on. I connected the pipe to the flexi pipe first then the end into the calliper. It was whilst tightening the union into the calliper that i noticed the calliper rock forward!?! Hmmm I know that's not supposed to happen! Grabbed hold of the calliper and was able to rock it back and forth!?! Hmmmm not good me thinks! Upon closer inspection it became clear the top bolt holding the calliper had come loose and at some point dropped out!?!?!?! Thus causing the calliper to move and upset the brake pipe unions seating! Luckily i had some calliper bolts to hand along with some brake pipe and fixings, so a new pipe made up and bolt with loctite on was replace as was the bottom bolt, as this was likely to have moved, i removed this added loctite and then replace! Brakes then bled and then taken for a careful test drive. Having tested the brakes i then tried 3 or 4 emergency stops on a quiet road and the brakes performed as they should!!! Yeeeeha!!! The reason this wasn't picked up in the beginning is due to the fact our drive is half gravel, half tarmac, and i always park on the gravel and the wife parks her car on the tarmac. So there was never really a wet patch to notice until this problem arose and i just drove straight onto the tarmac hoping it would stop easier than on the gravel!?! But have to say really am glad i found this before total brake failure or loosing the second bolt and dumping a calliper that could potentially be messy for all concerned!?! Have to say i have NEVER had this happen before plus when removing callipers i always use new quality bolts that come pre loctited! Just find the whole experience a little unnerving!?! Thanks to all for help and the advice given, Cheers Andy
  10. Best not be!!!......I put a brand new one on not 6 months ago and yes a quality part!?! 😡
  11. Sorry guys, yes it's a 300Tdi..... As for signs of failure, needed to stop a bit sharpish the other day, so jumped on the brakes and though it came to an almost stop right at the last the pedal seemed to push further and the motor rolled on for about 4 yards!?! Plus with engine off, foot hard on brake pedal, switch engine on the brake pedal drops again or pushes further in!?! Going to take the hose to the vacuum pump off and do a finger over the hose test as a final check later today. So are we saying basically any make of vacuum pump seems a fair option??? Cheers Andy
  12. Hi guys, been a while i know but work and hectic life keeps me busy sadly. I have just discovered that the Vacuum pump has died!?!......... I know the part number is ERR3539 so was just wandering which is the best option to get ie Blue box, Genuine or what??? Plus is it a straight plug and play type of job or is there something i should know when doing this??? Hope you're all good and well out there? Cheers Andy
  13. Thanks guys I'm with the program now! Thanks for the link @Daan pictures I can understand!?! @92a thanks for your very kind offer, but I think I will now invest in this push pull set up. There that wasn't so hard was it!?! Cheers all Andy
  14. @Peaklander thanks for that bit of info. So what size is fitting that the Banjo bolt goes through and the pipe work pushes onto? I know it has a copper washer top and bottom, no idea what it's called??? Thanks again Andy
  15. Can somebody please tell me what size Banjo Hose I need to fit for the Bonjo breather bolt??? Have found the bolt on ebay genuine at a good price, a fiver each so just need the hose tail part. Cheers Andy
  16. Cheers guys, will check float for taking in fuel, may look at bending wire arm down a tad as a last resort!?! Totally agree the need to know when fuel is low, is the Important thing! BUT!!! On the odd occasion when I've saved all my pennies and treat myself to a FULL TANK of diesel, I would like the Green F@#$%€& Monster to show some appreciation and have it's gauge READ FULL!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. A while ago I replaced the float in the fuel tank of my '95 300Tdi 90 And in some ways for the most part it works!?!.....But on the odd times when I'm flushed enough to have spare cash to it to the brim ie. the top of the filler pipe (Yes I know it's not good practice). The fuel gauge never shows/reads FULL on level ground!?! It ALWAYSshows 3/4 of a tank???...... Yet if I go down hill or round a right hand bend then the needle on the fuel gauge WILL rise to FULL!?! I have on numerous occasions removed the float and checked it's seated correctly, connected it up to the wires and moved it by hand with the ignition on and it all works and reads as it should!?!.....But FILL it with Diesel and it NEVER reads more than 3/4's Filled!?! Is this the way it is or am I being stupid and just need to drive round a downhill roundabout until there is actually 3/4's of a tank of Derv!?!
  18. I'm with Footman James and have had an agreed valuation for my '95 300Tdi 90 for the last 5 or 6yrs. I have increased it several times, think it's stand at 8K now!?! They asked what its value was and I gave them a figure, waited a few minutes and they came back and said OK! No photos to send in, no reports, no list of things added nothing!?! My paperwork from the insurers shows the agreed amount every time! I did ask what is the Maximum agreed value I could put on it and the guy said I can't tell you that!?! So every couple of years I put it up a Grand hence it's now at 8K. Every other insurer wants photos, reports and other information and I have told them I am not happy with the idea of someone sat in an office who knows nothing about LR's and what is involved in keeping it on the road and usable telling me what he or she thinks it's worth on a given day!?!
  19. @bodumatau and so it begins, the list of "Where's it coming from???" and "How to STOP it???". Those happy days of paddling in the foot well rinsing your socks and cleaning your shoes, contemplating the amount of condensation and it's flow rate to the volume of paper towels to soak it up!?! And then not forgetting mould and the debate of whether it will actually develop mushrooms or fungus!?! Sometimes I just leave the windows open for fun in the rainy season!
  20. Thanks for the info Monkey impressive bit of kit but sadly for me a far too impressive price, Ouch! Like the idea, maybe when I'm rich and famous!?! Oh hang on, if that ever happens I won't be working on it!!!..... Until then I guess it's back to the adjustable spanner, angle grinder and the test light!?!?!?! Such is life!
  21. +1 for Vehicle Wiring Products Ltd. @Monkey what make /type of printer are you using any info would be great, cheers.
  22. Good to see you back Mike, sounds like the engine flush has sorted it!?! At least no welding and modification required! By the way a BIG Thank you to Rachel for letting us all know the situation and keeping us all informed, also to your good lady both diamonds 💎
  23. Wishing him all the best and hope to see him posting back on here soon! An absolute legend on this forum, very knowledgeable, very helpful and always willing to share.
  24. Make a loop with a cable tie then feed it on to the spring clip and work it round, bit easier to use than a screwdriver as you can pull on the cable tie loop and not pinch or trap the rubber sleeve 😉. Worth a try next time and see what you think?
  25. Yeah for the first 3 months 🤣🤣 Sorry not helpful i know, just couldn't resist.
