  1. warming the metal first just means you can penetrate better with a less powerful welding set, I don't know what set you have or what it can handle but I use this technique a fair bit for hobby welding at home of thicker materials
  2. possibly it depends on how high your truck is at what points, mine is a pick up so the rear is higher, when It has the ifor back on I just slide under the barrier at my local Halfords I reckon im about 2" too high for the barrier but it just compresses the springs as I slide under the barrier haha
  3. just stop outside the tip and put some ratchet straps between axle and chassis compressing the spring, much qwicker than swapping wheels. note: im not saying this is safe for driving distance and I certainly wouldn't recommend it for road use, its just how I get in the tip
  4. also the disco had ABS, im guessing that the brakes work exactly the same way as they only have 1 brake fluid pipe so that shouldn't cause any problems should it?
  5. Thanks I knew western would answer first haha you have all made me a happy man
  6. you can use the oxy/ace set to gently warm the top plate and frame so that youi can get a decent weld between the two just dont know the oxy trigger and cut it haha
  7. Hi All I Have a 200tdi defender with a kaputt rear axle and drum brakes on the rear, i also have a v8 disco 1 with a perfect axle and disk brakes. The question: Can i just swap the axle to the defender as easy as a few bolts or its there anything more to it? I.E are the diffs geared differently or anything? Thanks Tom
  8. 4x4NUT that's a very interesting offer, I will be heading off to the Pyrenees in mid September for two weeks with the plan of completing RB1&2 but I was looking at pottering around your way towards Barcelona dependant on time, I may give you a shout while I'm out there thanks tom
  9. Welcome, Probably best car you will ever own. I love mine to bits (literally, I've touched every little bit of mine over the years) wouldn't change it for the world Tom
  10. I did also think it would make an awesome landy engine gazzar, I wonder how hard it would be to make one fit being a transverse engine
  11. Morning all ive been looking at intercoolers for a while now as i would like on that works better than the standard but dont like he price of allisports uprated ones, i was wondering if anyone with some knowledge could help, i am thinking of using an intercooler from a Volvo D5 engine as it is a good sizze and shape to easily fit in my truck and i think will be good enough for the engine (this is the bit i would like advice on) the 300 is a 2.5t D pulling 110BHP ish the D5 is a 2.4t D pulling upto 230BHP ish, im going to check the hose connections but think they are similar to a defenders heres a link to one on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-C30-S40-V50-C70-2006-D5-Intercooler-30742631-/281789228023?fits=Model%3AV50&hash=item419bf263f7:g:CqsAAOSwjVVVhxTp Tom
  12. that's fantastic, I saw a news story the other day where a lady farmer was given a fiesta as a like for like replacement for her defender, they didn't seem too impressed when it came back after trawling around the fields and being filled with everything from horse muck to big dogs haha
  13. my advisory this year was 'exhaust held on with zip ties' which is impressive that they're still working as I had the same last year hehe
  14. I bought the billet ally ones from optimill and im very happy with them very smooth and no play at all, also replaceable bushes ill find a link for you about £200 for a pair of front doors
  15. hi all i currently have some Mickey Thompson Baja Claw TTC 33x12.5x15 tyres and i can say they are the bees knees problem is i need two new ones or at a minimum 1 new one as i have a spare. these are no longer being shipped to the EU because some tosser in a prius got upset by their manliness so i am on the hunt for anyone that has a spare knocking about they would sell or a dealer with some left over in the stock room thanks tom
  16. Changing the joint while the arm is still attached to teh car is potentially fatal, it will be the most infuriating job you will ever set out to do and you will end up either a) hanging yourself b) ordingin a new arm with joint fitted i would advise you just order an arm straight away and talk to lots of people about the best way to pull the arm off the box because they are normally really tight P.S i agree disco drop arm conversion is very worth while (makes changing joints in the future much easier) tom
  17. if were talking defenders then they have never been type approved, hence why its legal to make your own major componets, suspension etc.
  18. I silicone mine shut too then replaced it when a brand new one came up cheap on ebay
  19. well i got the new drive tube today for the cable to run in my local hydraulic pipe specialist had one on the shelf, 8mm buddy tube (6mm I.D) so ill get this all flared up and fitted tomorrow and prove they work, the pipe cost £23 for 3.5 metres, although i will only need about 1m worth bodumatau, the stop 'top' location isn't infront of my eyes but would be in the field of vision as i hope my whole windscreen will be now, it is pretty close to where the original wiper stopped, just at less of an angle. fridgefreezer, some have mentioned the extra strain on the motor and other things i have read suggest it can handle it with a breeze, i mean you can buy an OEM kit here for running three wipers. http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/product/wiper-system--three-wheel-box/ i am relocating my motor to the td5 position, 1. so the drive cable will reach the furthest wheel box and 2. to get rid of the stupid curved tube which is adding ridiculous friction to the system. i suppose the most crucial part is making sure absolutely everything is slavered in lovely new grease to make it smooth running
  20. sounds like you need to make up some nice tapered washers to go under them and adjust the angle, i tried it with modern 'mist' type jets but land rover aerodynamics just wreak havoc on that idea also I've noticed i missed some vital info the replacement drive gear was from http://www.s-v-c.co....tems-and-parts/ other parts of the system can be bought from here too
  21. my jets can be seen in the last photo of the original post
  22. washer jet wise, i upgrade these years ago by standardising with the rest of the motoring world, i acquired two jets from an escort in the scrap yard and drilled my bonnet to fit them, now up until making this wiper set up i have always said that putting normal washer jets on was the single best modification i have ever done to my landy (bear in mind there isn't much original left now haha) so we will have to wait and see if they can be knocked from the top spot.
  23. hopefully ill get some film up for you before the weekend, I've got shoulder surgery on Saturday then ill be pretty much useless for 6 weeks while I'm not allowed to drive suppose i can spend lots of time on here trying to replace ralph as the part no. guru muahahhahaha
