  1. It's amazing what you guys are able to do! I gave myself a pat on the back when I changed a prop shaft How do you learn to do this kind of work?
  2. My reference to kryponite was a glib comment Mo, not one to take seriously. Kryptonite, to my knowledge, probably doesn't even exist. It was the element that gave Superman his powers. I was suggesting that unless it's as strong as 'the man of steel' himself it would be worthless. But you are absolutely correct, my experience of recovery is pretty basic so perhaps I shouldn't be commenting on here in the first place (although in my defence I did say it was unfit for purpose which is in line with everybody else's opinion).
  3. What, like a nice shade of puce? You know what they say, you can't polish a turd
  4. I agree, unless its made from kryptonite it must be completely unfit for purpose
  5. I've been mulling the same thing over recently. My chassis is fine, not a spot of rust on the rails. However, I'm going to need a new rear cross member in the not-too-distant future and I have a small patch need welding on an outrigger. As I really want to try building a truck from ground up I thought it might be a good idea to buy a complete chassis but then part of me thinks that I should just continue to keep what I have in the best condition possible and have a new rear cross member welded on at some point. Cost plays a huge part in it but also the desire to keep my truck in the same state it is in for as long as possible. I have been considering a particular wax-oil treatment that is widely advertised in the land rover porn mags but not sure whether it is worth while.
  6. Quite expensive but I'm sure it's a great day. I would like to do it but have a Land Rover to spend my money on
  7. bar stewards I really hope the guy gets it back
  8. Cheers Happy, However, "there has recently been a change in a lot of insurance policies and this often no longer comes as standard" I have been telling people for years that it is only permissible to drive other people's vehicles if your insurance policy allows you to. It's not a recent change to policies at all, it has always been the case that each individual policy is different to the next and assumptions should never be made. I wish people would just read the contracts they enter into!!
  9. I don't usually like to be judgemental because each to their own and all that, but some bile just rose up to the top of my throat
  10. I haven't got a lift and they fit my truck just fine. Gwyn said they are good for standard suspension up to 2" lift.
  11. I think this thread should be incorporated into a "Warning: Be careful what you fit to your truck" thread for newby folk attracted by some of these so called engineering companies who build 'specialised kit' for Landies. It is important that people pass on information about reliable and responsible manufacturers and suppliers so we don't all end up paying the price for poor quality modifications: the hike in insurance premiums.
  12. looking forward to seeing some pics! was it busy?
  13. Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you have come up with any solutions to the huge drafts that come in around the edge of the doors, particularly on older Defenders? It's not so much the cold that bothers me but more the noise when travelling at speed. The rubber seal around my doors is in pretty poor condition. Is it possible to replace the seal and if so, where can I get the seal from? Has anyone come up with any other draft (and even water) excluding ideas for the rest of the truck? Cheers John
  14. access is definitely easier but there still wasn't enough room to fit a socket without it getting stuck so I had to tighten up the nuts using two 14mm spanners. Not so easy in the cold and the dark
  15. Barros, every time you post on here you make me jealous!
  16. ahhh looks awesome! I don't think I could have resisted either!
  17. thanks for the help guys, I've just finished and it took me nearly 6 hours!!! I really need a propshaft tool as I had a nightmare removing all the bolts and then tightening them up again. I took it for a very gentle drive round the block and it feels good, I think I've done it right as neither prop fell off Just a word of praise for Gwyn Lewis: I sent him a text earlier before posting on here asking which way round the props went (how embarrassing! ) I explained that I was the mechanical equivalent of the village idiot and most people would probably not have entertained a fool like me. But by the time I had posted my question on here Gwyn had text me back to say "shortest part nearest the gearbox". What a top chap! I'm delighted with not only the product but the customer service. I know where I'll be buying my suspension from! Thanks Gwyn I'm ordering some new nuts and bolts tomorrow and will replace them asap. I rounded a few nuts while fighting with them and I'm not convinced that I've managed to get them tight enough. Still, another box ticked and another job done (albeit a very simple one by most peoples standards). Cheers for all the tips and advice folks, I love this place! John
  18. erm, which way on do these go? I'm doing the rear prop at the mo, should the grease nipple for the slider be at the diff end or the brake drum end?
  19. would it be ok to replace the props, order some new nuts and bolts in the week and replace them when they arrive? or should I avoid taking the props off too often? the reason I don't want to wait is because I have a uj on its way out
  20. nope, do I need them? what's wrong with the ones fitted to the old prop? are they not the correct size?
  21. Glad you've made some headway. Paddocks seem to be good when you have a problem with something purchase from them, they try to resolve any issue with the minimum of fuss. I guess the moral of the story is that the problem is sometimes not just one thing but a combination of problems
  22. OK, got me props, got me grease gun and grease, got me tools. Is there anything I need to know before replacing my props with my new ones? Any steps I need to follow or do I just undo the old ones and put the new ones on? Should the handbrake be off? I take it there's no need to have the truck on axle stands? Many thanks John
