  1. Good idea about the chain. However, the only thing solid where I will be are trees! Stumped springs to mind!
  2. Any chance of photos of any of these security devices? So do you mean you have one policy for your LR and trailer added to that or it's separate at £35? I do like the look of these trailers, but I will need some pretty good security measures to keep this attached to my vehicle in some parts of RO!
  3. Thanks for the info. This looks the business and there is a distributer in Germany too. I checked out the price list but couldn't find the canopy. How much extra did you pay for that? Cheers, Paul http://www.ifor-williams-trailers.co.uk/pr...genpurp/gd5.htm
  4. Being in the EU means nothing when it comes to rules! Remember that fiasco with UK speed cameras all having to be painted yellow because of EU regulations? Come to Germany as I have never seen one painted yellow. They are cement coloured if near a bridge and green if near a field! In fact I am surprised I haven't seen them camouflaged near the woods! As for the registering of my LR, I got this information from a company that buys cars from Germany and imports to RO. They said nothing over 8 years and no RHD. I tried the RO authorities and got nowhere. When I tried the British Embassy they told me to talk to the RO authority. Ended up chasing my own tail. However, life in RO is a bit like that.
  5. Thanks for that. I take it from the link you are selling it? I think this would be too small for me. I think I will even need a double axle to carry what I need to take. As for legalities, several people do have ex-mod sankeys over here, but they do need to pass an annual inspection and be insured. Cheers, Paul
  6. Hi, I have spent the weekend looking at the mountain of kit I have got to get to Transylvania in April. I was planning on getting a Sankey which would be useful on my tours. However, I am now thinking that a large standard road trailer would be of more use to move all my stuff. I could also use it for transporting building supplies for my house when there. The disadvantage would be that I could not use it off road. Any ideas on what trailers are robust enough for high miles and can carry heavy weights? Also does anyone know of any mates or haulage companies that regularly drive to Romania? Cheers, Paul
  7. I got this information from another Forum member who resides in RO. Because I will be a resident too with a local address i will be subject to road tax. I have no problem at all with this as I will be using RO roads. However, I do object to paying UK road tax when I won't even be living there. Yes, RO joined the EU in January 2007.
  8. Yes, I have seen these before. Someone recommended them, but can't remember who? Price seems reasonable if constructed well.
  9. Can you put the price in this thread when you get through to them? Looks good but expensive!
  10. A friend of mine who comes from Hungary lives nearby to me in RO. He has a car less than 8 years old and obviously LHD. He had so many weeks within RO before he was obliged to register. He then had to prove residency within RO. So I would have problems registering in say Hungary when I am not resident there. I would have to have show not only proof of residency but local ID as well. I see where you are coming from, but the red tape would sink me. Paul
  11. Tanks for your comments. I took part in that LR addict thread. However, I am just hoping there is some miraculous other option that everyone else has missed! I must admit having to pay UK road tax is simply taking the p**s! I am having to pay Romanian road tax which is fair enough, but UK as well????? I know I could combine it with a holiday, but most of it will be spent on the road! It is also time out from earning money, so will need to make sure the MOT expires out of season. There are a couple Brits over in RO that I have contact with who have taken their LR's. Both are on dodgy ground re MOT's, but because I'm doing tours there is no room for error. It is very hard to get good detailed information from the authorities in RO. I have to rely on word of mouth, so can imagine that the rules have probably moved on since. Cheers, Paul
  12. Some advice would be appreciated on how to remain road legal when outside of the UK for more than one year. I have a 12 year RHD Defender that I will take with me to Romania in April. Apparently I cannot register this vehicle in Romania for two reasons. One it is more than 8 years old and two, it is RHD. Romania joined the EU in January this year, so I am surprised that the rules are so different. Apparently I can buy ROVINYET (Road Fund) in Romania for one year at a time. I have also found a company that will offer insurance/green card for one year outside of the UK. Does anyone know where I would stand on the MOT as my LR will be on UK plates and remain registered with the DVLA. At the moment I can only imagine that I will have to reenter the UK once a year to renew it. The thought of this causes vast waves of nausea! Anything else to consider. Thanks in advance! Paul
  13. Thanks Ralph and yes, I have seen this site before on your recommendation. Cheers, Paul
  14. Thanks Mark, No I haven't seen this website. Do you have a web address for David? I take your point about watching. Do you know which forum members offer training? I have had a look around for a local LR group here in this part of Germany but with little success. The army do some off road training but this is for their own lads rather than civilians. I do not have a winch yet, but will need to get this sorted before I go to Transylvania in April. I don't really have the outlay to buy a new one, so will be on the lookout for a second hand one. Cheers, paul
  15. Are there any events coming up preferably in February where I can see some decent and safe recovery work? I need to learn the 'ropes' so to speak. Cheers, Paul
  16. Muenster this morning. B***dy freezing, -8oC last night!
  17. Thanks for the link Ralph, very interesting
  18. Has anybody tried using a high lift for recovery or is that even more dangerous?
  19. I am relieved it is not just me that views this as dangerous. I would have thought if you know you are going in for a drive like this you would have a nice big fat set of low inflated muddies on? If you do choose a kinetic rope, what would be the best recovery point to use? Having never winched a single thing in my life what was he doing wrong in the video when using his? Cheers, Paul
  20. My inexperience that makes me think it looks aggressive I suppose, as only used to car towing with an ordinary rope. It just looks pretty damn dangerous snatching like that with a massive elastic band!
  21. Thanks Dan. So if the fella in the film was recovering with a single non joined rope would taking up the slack at that speed be OK?
  22. I am no expert when it comes to vehicle recovery and was having a look for some film clips on the subject. I came across the following. This snatch recovery using a joined kinetic rope seems quite aggressive. Is it OK to snatch in this way without risk of a shackle flying through your windscreen? Cheers, Paul
