  1. Did you get around to this in the end Martin? Im looking at Por 15 also for my Tdi 90, need to get a shift on as summer is passing by quite fast! G
  2. Expensive and slow yes, but were working on the premise here that you DONT need it I know someone who recently had a whole gearbox shipped to Laos from Ashcrofts. Now that was expensive, but what else do you do? G
  3. You would be better off packaging up those heavy spares and leaving them with a reliable relative/friend. When the time comes, use your sat phone to book accomodation in the nearest town/city and then call your friend with the address and DHL it out. By the time you get there your halfshafts and spare diff will be waiting for you! G
  4. Thanks for the quick reply mate, appreciate that, settles my mind. I thought the backlash was for something else (internally), so all that now makes sense. I checked the crown wheel and the other bits I could see and it all looks fine. Fingers crossed. G
  5. Afternoon Gents, Recently purchased a Rover diff with a truetrac built in and the PO said all the bearings had been replaced recently. When I finally picked it up for the inlaws place this weekend it all looked fine, but I noticed there was play between the propshaft flange and the 'gearing'. so my simple question is, should this play exist and if so, how much? Its not much to be fair, but I just thought that before fitting it for good I should get it right. If it is too much is it just a case of fitting/removing shims on a trial and error basis? (Yes I have been reading all the threads). Is this straight forward and is there a guide somewhere to do it? Anything else I should check? cheers G
  6. Ok, you can get reducers from Ebay, but after having another look, im going to use the main pipe off the air box 3" to 2". then cut the small section that attaches to the wing in half and use that to join the main pipe to the southdown flexi. I was half way there and just put a screwdriver across my palm so now im back in!... for the night I think, I am not having a good day. Thanks for the heads up Ben, will look about. G
  7. I may end up doing this, but with my welding skills it will look tosh at best. at worst I will burn a hole in the cage! Got the hole cut out this afternoon dropped the main pipe in and my jubilee clips kind of work with it so I may stick with these. just need to sort out the pipework to airfilter now. Any ideas anyone? G
  8. I know this has been covered, but I cannot seem to find the answers I am after! Can anyone recomend an adaptor to reduce the standard 300tdi airbox inlet from the 3"? to the 2.5" flexi I have on my Southdown. The only other alternative is to use that funny looking T piece that acts as a check/dump valve incase water gets in. But im not sure I fully trust these. The other question is where to get the roll cage bracket. I was going to use 2 big jubilee clips I used on the previous snorkel but because of that plastic wing mould the southdown does not sit as closely to the cage. I have the original bracket, but could do with getting a mount for the cage. checked D44 but they only have one for 46mm PP cages. I need 51mm Any help appreciated G
  9. Rich, the infinity 400 weighs nearly 20kg! ok, 18.5 but add a matress etc. add your rack. It soon mounts up (no pun intended). If your going to do it, go velocity. they are all wider than a standard defender, so i assume your going to extend out over the sides. Have you looked at the Myway RTTs? 35kg. 3 roof bars. may even be worth getting 2 for comfort. I just cant see a ground tent working up there, sorry. maybe on a calm summer day, but when it gets rough...
  10. Air poles? seriously? do you have links? RTTs are well built, that is why they are heavy. They have full size mattresses to, adding to weight. I dont see the point of putting a ground tent on the roof. Just pick your camp spot as you usually would. going back to your original enquiry. You can get legs for the maggs so they can be used on the ground. Also look at the Oasis RTT which can be used on the ground to. If you were serious about using a ground tent on the roof I would only recommend a 3-4 season tent. Putting a pop-up on the roof is just plain stupid. Your more exposed to the elements up there and you need a proper tent to deal with inclimental conditions. The UK does not have the most predictable weather. G
  11. Your too kind Ralph, You will probably get a short snotty remark back from the seller. ow my cynical view of the world or maybe just Ebay
  12. You dont need an SLR. you just need someone who take take good photos. Any fool can set Auto on an SLR and take point and shoot photos (why does the image not appear on the LCD screen? ) I agree with all of the above. You need to be a 'salesman'. Could be worse, you could have done this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1994-LAND-ROVER-DISCOVERY-TDI-BLUE-4x4-expedition-/160598964465?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item256471b8f1 there was also a disco on this forum and ebay and his listing was shocking. carp photos, bad grammer and lines like 'had enough of you dreamers' 'got bigger and better coming from the states' 'will break if I have to'. Just a really bolshy attitude that makes genuine people stand off. Not saying yours was like this, but these are some GOOD examples of BAD ways to sell your rover. G
  13. Not yet, but im working on my awning set-up. just need to fab some brackets for the rack/cage. The rear one is nearly on. The sides attach via S hooks and velco onto the main awning. when mine is up I will send over some pics, but it could be a week or 2 before that happens. As above, dont expect full water tightness as they were not designed for this. G
  14. slightly off topic, how do you find the SP bushes western? I take it your 110 is heavily laden. G
  15. Warn M8000 with a brand new bowmotor, new albright solenoid pack, new steel rope, steel extension rope, all electrical leads and disco 1 mounting plate £150. He only lived around the corner, and i sold the disco mount plate a week later for £25 also got a series rear safari door for 99p. good condition with lock and glass. he was 5 minutes away. G
  16. Hi Dave, I realise that the inner is only fitted for excessively sandy/dusty places. I was just hoping to be able to wash them. If im replacing every 6000 miles, I may stick with the original set-up and put a pre-filter on the snorkel. not really sure what is best. G
  17. Thanks for this pinkie. I only ask because the Land Cruiser we used recently in West Africa allowed this and it was great to just wash out the dust etc. I meant that you dont really have to carry a spare. We will be taking on central asia, mongolia, siberia and then aus in 18months time, so I was thinking of fitting one of these. G
  18. Just a quick one, sorry if it has been covered before. Im looking to upgrade my 300tdi Defender with the wolf twin element air filter for extensive overland use. The crux of it is now: can you wash out the filter elements? or do they have to be replaced like regular ones? If they have to be replaced I may stick with what Ive got. cheers G
  19. Another GREAT British company going to the S%^tter then whats with the new website address? why not just retain the old one, put an update on the home page informing loyal customers and notify any contact changes (phone, fax, email etc). G
  20. Im glad its not just me then. I got the email, went to take a look, lost all my PM's with contact info my trip reports and photos... all gone. And I cant seem to change my password! I will never remember the one they gave me so it looks like I wont be going back there anytime soon. shame really. G
  21. stop and turn around? We were up there last month. One of the 90's in our group struggled (wrong line?) we tried the waffles but it spat them out, rather than take any more attempts we got out the ground anchor which gave it forward movement of some 12", traction gained, drove out. The 110 had no problems and I decided not to bother with it for the aforementioned reasons. JMHO G
  22. Hi Ali, I dont think there is anything wrong with it, for general driving around it is fine even up hills. When it drained I was on a severe rock ledge and had to get winched back off it. Im still going to seperate them as I think it will be better. G
  23. Richard, I currently have the same setup on my 90 however I am not too happy with the Y piece set-up as fuel regularly transfers itself when out greenlaning. At one spot on a particularly steep rock all the fuel drained out of the main tank into the rear and stalled my engine! I had to transfer fuel back into the main to get it moving. For this reason I am going to fit a seperate filler/breather as I think it is best. for a 110 this has to be the simplest and cheapest way of achieving extra capacity. G
  24. Morning Neill, Sounds like were in the same boat! We are leaving our trip till 2013 in order to save and clear a little debt. We will take our 90 and sankey trailer across central Asia, Mongolia and onto Siberia before shiping out to Aus. OWK split the China cost with IIRC 3 other parties and it was something they really wanted to do. G
  25. This is what most people forget about. Most overlanders use a 4x4 as a means of transport to make the most of their agenda. They dont care if its a 110 or a 70 series, its a means to an end for them as their main objective is to travel/explore. Likewise many landrover owners are not travellers and just want to drive their landy abroad for the fun of it whilst having little or no appreciation/time for culture, people, religion etc. these are 2 extreme examples but you can see where each camp comes from. I have the utmost respect for Anna and her family. To sell your house and throw caution to the wind (almost) to follow a dream demands respect. They had little vehicle knowledge before setting out and I dont think they were overly well travelled either. To head off on your own (mostly) across China and down through SE Asia says it all. most people dream and say "yer, I will do that", but how many people actually do? anyway, this is getting offtopic! sorry G
