Thanks to everyone involved !!!!! job well done !!!!!
Steve, top snaps, thanks for putting them up. Pity you took a video of the worlds worst bridge builders (must remember to study the rules more thoroughly in future
). A few nice shots of my co-drivers best going out shirt too

Another top AWDC event. Well done to Neil, Carole and all the AWDC team.
I thoroughly enjoyed the event, even though I spent most of the day with the bonnet up ( a few issues to resolve with the engine)!!!!! The punches we did were excellent with the wing protector bars already having proved their worth). Damage was minimal for what we did (rear flexi brake hose knackered and electrical terminal ripped off the fuel pump)
Looking forward to the next round where we hope to have ironed out some of the teething problems.

I really like the looks of NAS spec lamps. On my last 90 I just went for the for and reverse lamps to replace the awful oblong items:
With the new hybrid I decided to go whole hog and fit them all round (even on the tray at the rear):
So far I've been really pleased with them. Time will tell how much more they are prone to damage than the OEM items.

Barbeque Sat night for competitors and marshals courtesy of Scorpion Racing
Can't seem to find a mention of the BBQ in the recent event e-mails. Is it still on????

the motor is with the elec wizard!
Obviously not Pigster then

Les,
I went through I similar spat late last year. I got shot of the truck for a family runaround and sensible 4x4. I regretted it about a week after the truck had gone. I ended up with a whole lot more hassle and cost (both time and financially) purchasing and building up something else. I say keep it, even if you have to put it on the back burner for a while to regain your enthusiasm.

It looks like I'll still be working on the motor on Saturday too. The refurb of the 8274 hasn't quite gone to plan, putting me behind schedule. Still got all of the kit stowage to sort.
underpowered loud smelly water hating unreliable engine and skinny axlesHmmm, I've got a similar set up Lewis. This'll be the first time out for me in this truck. I've got to get used to an auto too. Time will tell I suppose

Oh dear.... makes me feel nauseous

I've done a few Disco steels. Grind the welds, the sparks fly nicely straight into your face, tap out centre (smack 7 bells of), don't forget to hit your wrist with a lump hammer, turn and tap.
I spent a whole day just seperating the centres out of five disco rims and a bit of cleaning them back up. It took me nearly an hour to clean the shower down that night
I used a method similar to that which Moglite descibes to reset the offset before rewelding:

Please be advised that due to a military training requisition at Tuff Terrains, Round 3 of the Challenge Trophy on May 13th will now be held at Green Hall Farm, Llanfyllin. Grid Ref: SJ165190.
Please note this site is not suitable for spectators
Marshals required
Well, my other half would go and watch at Llanfyllin again after seeing Simon Marlow take a roll and then Rob. She's a bit nervous of tumble trucks now. Although I have to say this site make's my bum twitch slightly.

sykeside campsite at the rear of the brothers water pub
we stayed here many time when on laneing trips site and pub owned by same chap
dog friendly can even take them in the pub first class food, the facilities are very clean, shop on site tel 01768482239
I can also recommend the Sykeside campsite. Make sure you put any food away in your car overnight as tent raids by badgers are commonplace. The other campsite just down the road at Glenridding isn't that bad either but Skyeside would be the campsite of choice if staying in this area.
The Great Langdale campsite is also very nice (the Old Peculiar at the Old Dungeon Ghyll is top quality.) There's also a nice campsite just a hop over the Hardknott Pass at Boot.

130 uses these front springs
NRC8448 Driver [right hand side]
NRC8449 Passenger [left hand side]
these are identical to the 110 heavy duty front springs. spring seat on axle & upper fittings & attachements are as per any 110.
Top info...cheers. Off to try and get some freebies now

BBQ saturday night........................ i'll be the one in the car park ''still'' working on his motor
See you all there
You'd better keep Pigster away from any free ale. You know how useful he'll be the next morning if he has one too many

I've just added 130 helper springs to my 110 Defender SW. A much nicer ride. The rear is lifted by about three inches.
A simple job. Just order the two springs. The four plates. Two top and two bottom. The plates are about 25 quid each. Get four longer bolts to hold the bottom spring plates in position.
Have a look here. Page two how I did mine. http://www.landroveraddict.com/smf/index.php?topic=358612.0

Mike,

These 110 Parts pages should help, no change in A frame or trailing arms.
Many thanks as always Ralph. Does the 110/130 use a different front spring when used in the H/D setup or is it still NRC8044 & 45??
-
I'm tryin to get hold of the PN's for the heavy duty suspension as used in 130's (They use a inner helper spring as well as the standard rear spring).
Can anyone give me the PN's they use on all the springs (front, rear and helper) in this setup.
I'm also after a diagram showing what other (different) parts are used when the helper springs are installed. I presume there must be a difference in both the retaining method at the axle and something different on the chassis end of the spring.
Any help is much appreciated

Come on then, who's going???? I know there's more than a couple of us still trying to bolt trucks together as quick as we can.
It's looking more and more likely that I will make it now that I have resolved a couple of issues with the truck and my biatch has managed to shirk himself of his family responsibilities.

IIRC it's resistive - rather than having resistive HT leads. To do with noise surpression I think. I know Nige had the wrong plug/lead combo when he went EDIS and it didn't like it.
So fitting BP6ES in a standard 3.5efi system in my challenge motor shouldn't have any detrimental effects then. (Unfortunately I have already bought a set of BP6ES before I fully researched this
)

Sorry to bring this thread back to the top but....
I've been trawling through several threads related to recommendations for V8 spark plugs. Some recommend NGKBP6RES where as others recommend BP6ES. Whats the difference between RES & ES (I know it's R before all of you smart alec's reply) and what effect does this have on the engine???

Just wondered, after reading the responses to Lewis's thread:
Amongst the Challenge people, who takes their vehicle to site on a trailer and who drives it there? I know that the vehicles have to be road-legal but I'm curious to know how common trailering is.
I spent two years driving to and from events, but this year is the first year trailering.
Traillering is cheating. Drive the vehicle within it's limits and you are then able to drive home. If you are on portals or something special then maybe a trailler is acceptable but otherwise no.My truck is my daily drive aswell. So it has to work again on the next working day.
Don't agree!!. I spent two years driving to and from events up and down the country as well as competing. A 500 mile or so round trip on simex (normally covered in mud on the way home) hoping that something wouldn't go bang either on event or on the way back got a bit much. There were times I'd have to work on the car as soon as I got back from an event just to make sure it got me to work the next day. In fact, having an enforced flat bed taxi ride home from an event (with the missus who was there just to watch, but now covered in mud because the inside of the truck was) forced a complete rethink.
I'm looking forward to having the security of a trailer, the dry, clean and warmpth of a tow vehicle and the knowledge that 2am repair sessions on the comper are no longer required.

Myself and a friend have entered Round 2 of the AWDC Challenge Trophy at Kirton on the 15th, it will be our first time competing ever, our first time offroading together and my first time as a winch monkey/co-driver, so basically we havent a clue what we are doing
Its barely 3 weeks away and I'm starting to get concerned so what I really need is your help, advice and encouragement
On the Kit list we have the following
4x Shackles
1x Tow Rope
2x Tree strops
1x Spade type ground anchor
2x Snatch Blocks
2x pairs gloves
1x Warning triangle (AWDC regs)
1x pair of Waffles
A Kirton regular also recommended a plate and pin type ground anchor but I dont have one yet - do we need both anchors?
No jack because we have no spare wheel/tyre (and cant get one) - is this foolish?
No means of driver/co-driver communication aside from shouting
No CB, but I can fit one if neccessary
On the spares list we have
CV's
Front shafts
Rear shafts
Winch Motor
Tape, cable ties, bale string, bits of wire etc
Ridulous quantities of WD40 in case it rains
I'm also planning on taking a basic tool kit and electrical set
So the things I really need to know are
1) Am I packing too much kit/too little kit - i.e what do you carry when competing, what do you leave at the truck/trailer?
2) What do you all carry in the way of spares? We have cadbury's finest axles, lockers and a V8 so we expect breakages of shafts
3 ) Can someone please give me a detailed low down on the co-drivers duties, I know that i need to look at the pictures and determine the route to the punches but what else?
Yours, very gratefully
Lewis
Lewis,
First things first, if it's your first time out just go to have have fun. The learning curve will be steep, trust me. My first event was the first round of the 2005 series. It was a bit like not be able to swim very well and jumping in the deep end of the pool.
Most of the other competitors will have been in your shoes at some point. It's a quite freindly series and the other guys (including me) will help you out of sticky situations if the need arises.
Your equipment list looks fine, I think I'd put in a spare winch rope/extension though. A ground sheet is also required in the regs for carrying out repairs on. Personally I'd think again about not having a spare wheel/ tyre to use, if its a lack of jack that's deciding this, you could just take a bottle jack. I haven't found the need for a pin and eye recovery point on this site so won't be taking one.
Your spares list looks OK too although I never carry a spare winch motor and I put in a small bottle of EP90.
With regards to tools, have a think about the repairs you may need to carry out. A blown CV will meen you need a hub nut spanner and possibly some circlips.
If your co-driving your general duties involve running around all day, getting shouted at and general getting covered in mud
I'll be around on the day(cheque going in the post today Neil) if you want to come and say hello. Thats provided I sought my damned over fuelling problems

Unfortunately I didn't get to that many punches on Sunday so can't comment on the amount of snapped/ driven over boundaries. I have to admit to falling foul of them though. During the two woodland punches (1&2) I managed to reverse underneath the boundary between the two punches when trying to get out of the way for Ed & Dave:
I still hadn't realised that I was underneath it whilst waiting for Chris to clear the next punch:
After Chris had cleared the punch I started out from here to get it. When a marshall pointed out that I'd gone underneath the boundary I was a little shocked to say the least. I went back and re-punched following the boundaries laid out. (Which actually drove better the second time around.)
