  1. I've done what JU says. Fit standard defender column switches, and the standard defender red wiper relay/delay unit. I then wired it up per the defender, and I even used the same color wires as the defender uses. Job done. Gives me intermittent, and also the nice 5 (or however many it is cant remember) wipes automatically when you squirt the washers.

  2. IVA eligability is not part of the MOT. You could take a hybrid registered as a ford cortina, and so long as it was ok in every other respect it would pass the mot. The only time it being incorrectly registered is ever likely to be picked up is at a VOSA roadside check. IMHO this too is fairly unlikely as I personally have only ever seen VOSA dipping tanks for red diesel - thats all.

  3. Engine, gearbox, axles are worth keeping/selling on. Seats if in really good nick. PAS box only worth keeping if it doesnt leak. I'd scrap the rest as having done it myself, the time and hassle involved in removing body panels etc far outweighs what they're actually worth.

Shell and chassis are only worth weighing in for scrap. Anything else unless its in absolutely pristine condition i'd just scrap.

  4. That sounds about right for a 300 auto. I used to have a 300 auto softdash RRC and used to avaerage around 20mpg just running about, and just about managed 25mpg on a long run. Fuel consumption was truely appauling whch was the main reason i got rid of it in the end.

The autobox is what kills it. The cam belt was replaced in my ownership, and the pump timing was spot on. The autobox was also rebuilt by Ashcrofts during the time I had it. None of which made the slightlest difference to the fuel consumption other than making for smoother gear shifts. I believe this is down to the fact that the torque converter doesnt lock up until over 2000rpm, so you end up trundling along at say 30mph in 3rd gearwith it running at over 200rpm, whereas in a manual you'd be in 5th with it just ticking over.

  5. Yep - quite agree - street legal cars and no trialers allowed. The whole thing to be set out to be non damaging. No challenge wings, no bobtails and no tray backs. I'd also like to see tyres limited to something sensable like 33" max diameter (bearing in mind you cant legally buy anything big and agressive any more). However I would highlight that i would NOT like it to be run to ARC rules. They are ludicrous and outdated.

  6. Try driving with 4wd selected on your Series transmission and feel how the steering behaves on tight corners. You will soon want CV joints.

No thats not case, as a series box has no centre diff, therfore you're effectively driving it with diff lock engaged all the time.

I agree that there is some kick back when at full lock, but frankly you only ever use full lock on the road when parking. For general driving i dont ever notice any kick at all. Dont forget that things like ford broncos came front the factory with no cv's but were permanent 4wd.

  7. Yup - megajolt is easy and pretty cheap. I ran megajolt on the V8 in my series with carbs and it made soooo much difference.

I now run it on my VW beach buggy, so it possible to fit it to any engine. Mapping is easy as the timing specs are well documented in the various manuals and as fridge says you can work the rest out easily.

Well worth it in my opinion.

  8. Work out what thread the existing sender in the head is and replace this with one to suit whatever gauge you buy. VDO do a good range of senders in a very wide variety of threads.

You do not want the sender in the top hose, you want it in the head. If for example your thermostat fails shut, with the sender in the top hose, you gaueg will read stone cold whilst in actual fact the engine is massively overheating. With the sender in the head it tells you the true engine temp.

Egauges.com are usually the cheapest even with shipping and delivery is also usually quicker than from uk based suppliers.

  9. I have a pair of 072's permanently wired in parrallel in mine. I understand that these will drop straight into a standard 90 battery box. They're nothing special and were the cheapest ones I could get from the motor factors. They've been on there 7 years now, and have been fine with my electric winches etc.

Bearing in mind you don't run electric winches i would think these would be ideal for you.
