  1. You dont need to lift the head - the valves will not be damaged.

You will need 8x new pushrods and a cam belt kit. You may need some parts of the rocker gear, you may not - it doesnt always damage them.

Easy enough to fix yourself and more an inconvenience than a major problem.

  2. IIRC I skimmed the brackets on the side that bolts to the axle tube, so not affecting the bolt holes that the calipers bolt onto. The brackets are immense there, so there is plenty of scope to thin them down a little here. If you look at the construction of an disk braked axle with the welded on caliper mounts, and compare the two, the welded on mounts really are quite weedy when compared with these bracket.

I do take your point about what happened to Gresh etc, however i suspect that in a court of law, the simple fact that you have modified the braking system at all, would be enough to land in loads of trouble. I would also point out (although I accept that I'm not 100% certain of the facts) that part of the problem Gresh had was shockingly poor maintenance, such that he ended up with 2 brake calipers on an axle that were not even a matching pair!

  3. All the challenege boys are in the same boat I'm afriad. Simex's are to all intents and purposes no longer available, beyond the few odd ones Devon 4x4 and the like have left in stock. There is a thread about it on the Devon4x4 forum - it seems the recent container load of Simex's they received are the last ones that they ever expect to get in.

Bear in mind the fine to the tyre suppliers is £5000 PER TYRE that they supply illegally, I cant see many people prepared to break the rules!

  4. Use range rover rear disks and hubs, and range rover rear calipers, and you simply need to thin the brackets down by about 1.5mm or so (cant remeber exactly i did it so long ago) - much easier than pissing about making spacers.

IIRC i use drum braked 90 rear stub axles. do a search on here, or possibly the other (old) forum for a post describing how i did mine many years ago.

  5. Wot he said - basically anything that is not S rated is illegal to sell within the EU. S being the sound rating, which more or less means that anything agressive is no longer be available. (lets face it we all know how badly Simex etc howl when on the road).

This law came in october 2011.

The laws do no apply to remoulds as yet, so Insa Turbos etc should still be available.

You can read a bit more about it http://www.blackcirc...ise-regulations

  6. I've had this - i solved it by running a 10metre air hose up above the compressor, in a coil, and then dropping it down to a moisture trap. Then taking my outlet hose up high out of the moisture trap, before taking it off to where I was working. The first coil allows the air to cool and hence the water to re-condense before it gets to the moisture trap, as the air coming out the receiver was too hot to allow it to condense until it got to the tool.

    This worked for me!
