  1. Rover 2.25 back in? Rover 2.5 Rover V8 (3.5>4.6) Rover T16 Ford Pinto Ford Essex V6 BMW M30 The Tdi in my Disco is "alright" it will never be anywhere near as good as the 3.9 V8 in the last one, yes in time when suitable donor is found, a V8 will be installed under the bonnet, we toyed with 6cyl BMW M30 but decided to do something different.
  2. Right then, look for new tin can whilst fettling this one into some sort of shape again. Do you think I could find neoprene seals to seal between filter housing and filer base? Something 5~8mm thick? be a good start if I can't find a good used one
  3. £15k 100% export sold there for $60/70,000 Potential profit of $40,000
  4. I will keep an eye on the usual net trading sites here, you'd be amazed at how much bonnets, wing and doors go for over here!!! Not to mention the much desired XS trim seats, they would make a sweet upgrade and be snapped up!! I saw a post on FB a few days ago where one guy was bleating how "it's only enthusiasts buying vins and logbooks to build hybrids", it really boiled my blood as it's exercisers like him(these exercisers are found globally, not just a UK phenomena) that help fuel these thefts as they see nothing wrong with ringers or cheap "like new" parts of unknown origin, but price is right an all that!! Mike, was the registration etched onto the glass in the doors do you know? Quite common here still.
  5. Hadn't considered the future snorkel fitting TBH (feels a bit silly ) What better suits a snorkel fit on a D1 then, plastic box or tin can type?
  6. Got a bit over zealous with the removal of the air filter on the 200Tdi, been in and out a few times in the last 10,000kms but today the rubber seal was stuck solid! 10mins drifting it out with a bit of wood But now the back end is galled up a bit as I was leavering and beating it around What to do now? I can get by with it for now but should I look to replace it with another tin can or is there something better out there? I had thought 300Tdi style but I have a second battery and a fuse board with relays where the actual airbox would sit. suggestions.....
  7. Really sorry but £28,000 for that?Headlights. WTF..... why not some JB Speakers or even cheap LED jobbies off fleabay? And look in the back, the ultra sexy bare white insides of the side panels, yuck...... poor finishing of a bad idea. I do like the steering wheel for some reason
  8. Of course its not ethical to do it, but just like Ford, who pulled out of Ghent, Belgium to completely scratch build a manufacturing plant down in Spain, it all came down to Spanish gov doing tax break deals, ok Spain needed the work but Belgium didn't need to have 15,000people unemployed. Anyone who actually bought into the "end of production" sham, well shame on you!! 1) marketing ploy. 2) good airing of excuses to stop European built vehicles. 3) yet more hype and column inches as enthusiasts speculate as to a potential successor. I thought abou the successor a fair bit, it will be just another soft roader with heaps of electronics and an ecu for everything. But I can well see there being an import market for the off shore built vehicles, be near as dammit same price as now though.
  9. I saw some safari style ones on ebay recently but a friend said his looked the part but the plastic is brittle and first thwack with a branch and its cracked half way down its length Still looking myself so will be watching with interest!
  10. :( Tbh, never thought about that element
  11. Exactly, we all expect different thing from our vehicles, especially me, but I still can't get my head around hobby series getting a Tdi overs several much nicer choices in the petrol engine. Every positive poster screams at the top of their lungs "ECONOMY", but unless it's to be a daily driver or very regular tow car, for me it just does not make sense, even then(now to really upset the "I don't believe the numbers crowd") my series was always around 14/15mpg towing my 22' tandem axle caravan weighing close on 2750kgs fully loaded for the vacation, how on earth folk seem to have ever allowed such poor consumption to occur is beyond me, many quote less than that running light footed and empty Although this is becoming just like a discussion on converting series to coils, jus buy a Defender
  12. If ever there was a comment to smak the fanboys in the face it was this one lol I loved the Rover IOE engines, I once drove a series 1 with a 2ltr 4 pot and even that was super nice! I can see another project looming on my horizon, sell the Disco, get an econo box and get a series with a 6 to rebuild
  13. Tell that to a great many winch bumper makers for Discoveries, I got a pic somewhere of a 300Tdi disco with what resembles a nose cone Mind you, why put it there unless space in the back was an issue? For sure premature rear door deaths accepted! Next time Chris stop an ask him why
  14. I totally see the easy fitting std parts and economy, the simple wiring, the minimal servicing aspects of Tdi conversions. Daan I totally get the turbo whine when under full load, mines been much more enthusiastic since fitting the new turbo a few months back Bowie, I was aware that an air portable light weight is indeed heavier than a civvy SWB Its all horses for courses, everyone has different ideas of what they want from their series and there seems to be very few who will ever fully realize the potential from their conversions, either they barely do 3,000 miles in a year pottering to the tip and back maybe venture down a lane or two(no I'm not knocking those types of owners!!) But for those who do jump into Tdi conversions, a great many started off with a worn out engine to start and never got to enjoy a 2.25 in goed health and state of tune, the Tdi is just the easy route with the promise of good economy(which is never revealed due to limited miles traveled and by the time they covered the cost of conversion they sold up in favor of a D4) One engine floats my boat for an early 90 repower or a swb https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rover_KV6_Engine
  15. No not a 2.25, I had a 2.6 6cylinder, have a look through this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOE_engine#Rover_IOE_engines nothing like a 2.25 OHV engine. Quite interesting how there seems to be an idea that this thread is about saving 2.25 petrol series, infact, I do believe there to be better engines that could be better fitted. T16 from Rover, M30 from BMW, hell even a K series engine is actually quite good, just got bad press for its early life in a hippo probably manly enough for a SWB or a light weight too.
  16. yep, going +2" body lift and +2" suspension without any longer bump stops.{Sarcasm button on} Phase 3 will be 4.7HD ring and pinions built into detroit centred diffs and 35" MAXXIS TREPS, I feel the need to over compensate? Her in doors thinks it's a midlife crisis? {Sarcasm button off}
  17. For the disbelievers in 26mpg, here are a few things Brian and I did when it first came home, head off and busy as far as we could get inside the inlet with the die grinder to remove casting left overs, valves out and the ports opened up a little more then 1/2 filled it with ball bearings and very slow spin on the lathe to let the ball bearings smoothe away the rest of the imperfections, brand new old stock solex carb and vaporiser plate, exhaust valve seats pulled and new hardened seats fitted along with a little fettle of the exhaust ports. Brian was an oldschool farmer with more engineering experience forgotten than I will ever learn, I still miss that grumpy old man It was the engine fettle and running a road biased tyre except for laning or planned P&P days that gave good mpg, tyres and their pressures have such impact on fuel economy! Paul rebuilt the 2 1/4 to better than new standard, I remember sitting in his workshop while he disassembled the original carb, quick look over it in bits and he rolled up the cloth and put it in a card board box to be sent back to the uk for rebuilding, he said it is so worn up he's surprised it ran at all. I am not at all surprised by negative comments towards elderly 2 1/4 petrols, a great many were worn up long before they got to you! The comment about series owners being tight rings quite true, and the lack of servicing holds very true!!! I change oils annually or sooner if miles get racked up, but a petrol engine oil should not be black and stink! I saw a lot like this when looiing for my own series, and always got the "it's a Land Rover, they run forever". I think Fridge nailed it quite good too, cost Vs cost and especially on longevity of ownership! I also think there is an element of technophobia in there too as a more modern engine requires more than the 6 wires of a Tdi
  18. Jos claims 10.5l/100kms more on a run and much more when its snow and ice, guessing it has something to do with being scared of the throttle in a rear wheel drive series, must be interesting when the turbo kicks the back end out for you I regularly returned 26mpg in my 2.6 6 cyl pick up, my mate Paul in Germany had a 2a 2 1/4 swb thhat was 25mpg+ all day long.
  19. Lift kit just ordered. https://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=ebay.co.uk+body+lift+kit+discovery+50mm&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CB4QFjAAahUKEwi32oDcgdfIAhWF93IKHfcYCAs&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fitm%2FRANGEROVER-CLASSIC-BODY-LIFT-KIT-2-DISCOVERY-%2F140363887280&usg=AFQjCNGU-XZjrZLUlTRHqnhaHrWrj0WSrQ&sig2=ReSsEi-pY8afixpXJeO6iQ Gawd himself only knows when I'll have time to fit it? Piggy bank getting raped next month for the +4" brake lines, and TF210 suspension kit.
  20. Just home from meeting up with some fellow enthusiasts whome I met at Budel. Three new friends all running series Land Rovers, one thing in common, all run a different engine than LR made them with, two of the three petrol and one diesel. Jos has a series 3 ligh. Iight weight with a rover 2ltr turbo petrol engine. Eric with a swb series 3 pick up with a Ford Essex V6 2.9 injection. Marlon with a series 2a lwb running a 200Di (less the turbo). I really liked the petrol powered trucks but the diesel engined lwb was just too loud for me!!! We talked a lot about the trend in the UK to stick a 200Tdi and now more commonly a 300Tdi motor in a series, and I pointed out the tax issue here as a persuasion to petrol but even Marlon agreed, if it hadn't been for the fact that his barge was 40+ and the conversion already done, he'd happily run a petrol in his series. Why? All said the noise of a clattery diesel was too much to bare in a series cab, all of them claimed figures of around the 10~10.5ltrs/100kms so diesel might not offer the saving grace of best consumption! I just thought I'd share as a former petrol powered series owner, I still don't see the fascination of fitting a 200 or 300Tdi in a series when there are so many smashing petrol lumps out there that can out do a diesel in everything except higher torque I suppose. I know there will be a few who will for sure knock petrol engines especially modetn electronically controlled ones in favor of diesels but I really don't see the fascination?
  21. Hang on to it, get surface corrosion tidied up an wait for production to cease, then just add £5,000 I know three guys who have bought 90s & 110s with this exact idea.
  22. Flywheel was fine and I did in fact run the engine on the hoist momentarily whilst holding a bit of emmery in my paw to see what it was like but no signs of glazing. Hadn't thought about the latter! For sure a bit of clutch slip is prefferable to gearbox/diffs/half shaft destruction!!!
  23. I spent 15 minutes hunting high and low in the engine bay of my boss's Audi RS6 for the dipstick to double check the computers recommended "oil now" message, took a call to main dealer to find out it don't have one This thing is the next step for manufacturers to isolate drivers even further from their cars, "most" cars still have a dipstick for the driver to check the oil level. funny, i thought this was a thread on the new trend of plastic oil filter housings and going back to old paper disposable elements
  24. No problem exporting it here!!! I'd build something special on it first before the trip to the RDW to get it written in but i can see some exciting opportunities here!!!
  25. Ah ha, good news there is that 90 springs and RRC springs are pretty much interchangeable, ok some engine models vary but not by much, if anything softer ride is your friend. I didn't realize where you were but I can well understand wanting suspension that would soak up the bumps.
