  1. Apparently they work quite well, though the one I have on my RIB isn't really Milemarker rated so I haven't tried it
  2. I can't comment on snow or sand as neither is something I get stuck in, but I can say from lots of experience that in deep peat which is most of the terrain here, pretty much anything standard is hopeless - I have military pin and tube anchor and a Pull Pal copy built by a forum member and either of them will put out very easily in the sort of stuff you get stuck in - mainly because beneath the surface there is no strength at all so the anchor pulls out (pin and tube) or through under the ground (plough anchor). I should imagine that once buried, a plough anchor behaves much the same in snow and sand as it does once it is through the turf mat in wet peat, in other words the substance has no inherent strength and the only answer is to keep adding cross sectional area to the spade until you eventually get to the point where the resistance to pulling it through matches what you need to extract yourself. I've had situations where I have been not really very stuck (could easily have got out with a pull from another vehicle) and only just got out with both anchors chained together plus drive assistance. I keep meaning to make an extra wide spade for my plough anchor (probably about 36" wide x 24" long") but it is a "round tuit" job I've also tinkered with the idea of modifying the anchor so that once the spade is fully buried, it can be allowed to rotate round to 90 degrees to the direction of pull, as I think that would help its resistance in extremely soft ground but you need to have exactly the right angle for spade entry otherwide it won't bury properly, so just altering the fixed angle of the spade wouldn't work. Another vapour build idea at the moment though
  3. ...and budget for a new fuel pump soon. Usually when they get noisy is just before they get quiet, permanently.
  4. I suspect the sticker is all to comply with NAS emissions garbage (England hadn't really invented emissions in 1995, boy how things change...) and as there never was a Tdi engined NAS vehicle there won't be a sticker from Land Rover. How good are you with a scanner and Photoshop Not all 300Tdis had EGR from the factory, it was an option for a long time and usually doesn't work by now anyway so you are better off without it!
  5. Sometimes a hot air gun will take off stickers OK, but the one I think it is, is much heavier material than most vinyl banana republic graphics you see on other vehicles and I've never tried removing those. Methylated spirits and elbow grease usually does the job for glue removal afterwards.
  6. Well the new Kipor agents in the UK don't have any available till the end of February but there is a Hyundai equivalent which seems like a badge engineering exercise (i.e. another 418cc single cyl air cooled diesel engine with an alternator producing 4500w continuous) probably going to go for one of those I think.
  7. I noticed that on one of the dealer's sites for Kipor, they are quite open about parts being available, prices etc whereas Wolf seem to be vague on such matters! Downside is the Kipor is two to three months away and I could use something for mid January Time to get on the scrounge I think
  8. Yep - stick your ear to the tank like you just did If there is nothing at all then either the pump is f***ed or there is no power to it. You can normally hear a quiet hum, before it expires this often increases for a short time to a noise which sounds rather like a cat being fed through a mangle tail first (wheeeaaarowwwwowowowowoww), then goes quiet. Bear in mind the pump only runs for a short time (about 30 sec) after you switch the ignition on. The bad news is that you need to either take the tank out or cut a hole in the floor to access the pump. The measurements for doing this cut without hitting anything important are elsewhere on the forum (I am not sure if it is in here, or in the Tech Archive, or in the International forum, but one of the three...) Check power/earth to the pump before you fork out a couple of hundred beer tokens for a new one, but if it is not running I would say it is 80% likely to be the pump rather than the power to it as they aren't the most reliable thing on the planet.
  9. OK what do people think about this then http://www.kipor-generators.com/product.asp?id=476 seems quite similar to the Wolf in general spec but quite a bit cheaper.
  10. I think they would fit on the vehicle, if there are any clearance issues it is on the front not the back but I have seen 265/75R16 fitted with only minor mods and they are taller. What will probably not fit is the spare, as the 255/70R16 BFG AT on my back door brushes the back bumper and I think any increase in height would prevent it fitting.
  11. I'd check the fuel pressure too, the fuel pump might be working but on the way out and this usually pops up when you ask it for lots of fuel.
  12. I agree - check the relay and also the power/earth feeds to it as it takes about 100 amps so if something is not right it might affect proper operation
  13. Check the cable to the release lever is not seized - if you open the bonnet and look at the mechanism it is pretty obvious how it works, you will probably find the movement of the locking part is restricted and this is usually down to a cable problem if not that then the actual locking plate might be seized up.
  14. I thought they were different - I suspect you'll find a Nanocom won't communicate with a NAS vehicle but that is purely a guess - however you should find something to do the job.
  15. Check the end tanks of the radiator, it is a poxy arrangement of metal and plastic crimped together and they have a reputation for leaking. You should find lots of pink stains wherever the leak is. It could be the head gasket - but I'd check the rad first. Was the power loss definitely something different to normal or just the effect of a full vehicle on a long hill?
  16. Put a voltmeter on the terminal of one of the glow plugs and get somebody to switch the ignition on - how long do you have 12V at the plugs for?
  17. I believe it does the Td5 ECU, 10AS alarm system, and the SLABS ECU on a D2 - see here http://www.bearmach.com/Cust_pag/nanocom/index.html - so I don't think it will be any use to a V8 ecu. I'm also not sure that the NAS vehicles use the same diagnostic interface as a normal model, something in the dim recesses of my mind says that the NAS vehicles were different but I'm not sure of the details
  18. Petzl Tikka for me, just like eating lots of carrots so you can see in the dark without needing to use your hands Battery life is so good on the LED torches these days (50 hours plus) that there is simply no need to tie yourself to a 3 pin socket
  19. So are you saying a Kipor and a Wolf is the same thing? Good comments about the Kipor on here I think. Main thing for me is that I can buy this one and a similar model (same size but without the acoustic cover) locally and anything else is 3 months away, if it is going to be carp then I will wait, if it isn't then I might get it now. Then again I might not as a large puddle of water around my central heating boiler spells ££££
  20. As above - specifically this model http://www.wolf-online.co.uk/product.asp?id=001640 seems like quite a lot of generator for the money - anybody know what make of engine/alternator they use? I don't expect it to have the 30,000+ hour life of an aircooled Lister TS series but just wondered what it would be like for living out in the sticks for the odd weekend maybe racking up a couple of hundred hours a year and living in a shed in between times. Any comments good or bad from anybody please?
  21. I suppose it depends on what form you see your project taking. A Discovery is likely to be cheaper and more plentiful but probably harder to modify without it looking like a dog's breakfast. Which engine is like which winch you will get all the answers within minutes of each other
  22. Probably just the external linkage seized up due to lack of use, not an uncommon problem sometimes lots of WD40 will sort it out
  23. A 200Tdi engine is pretty good at that without adding speakers to it Speakers in the roof perhaps? Or maybe under the front seat?
  24. Not sure but somebody might have a tape measure
